I don't know what all the fuss is about. Many languages have unnecessarily gendered words.
For example, in Hebrew, "large red suitcase" technically translates as "luggage-(feminine) red-(feminine) large-(feminine)", with the single character that is bolded denoting the feminine: מזוודה אדומה גדולה
