When cutting your own hair, go very slowly, especially your first few times. You likely only need a stationary mirror and a small handheld, but a trifold is great too if you want to invest in one. Get some decent barber shears too... avoid using regular scissors as they don't cut as well. Start with easy cuts such as an undercut, maybe with a combover if you like. Then move on to fades if you so please. The hardest part of cutting your own hair is that you can only practice every few weeks since you have to wait for it to grow back... find some willing test subjects if you can so you can at least get comfortable with the clippers and/or shears. Lastly, there are tons of YouTube videos on how to do whatever cut you might want.
Sincerely, a guy who cut his own hair for 2 years.
Also, the little protective piece that ships over the blade is not a throw away packaging material. It's meant to go right back on after you've oiled it.
The only major difference between "professional" equipment and the home stuff is professionals maintain their equipment regularly.
However, I will say that Wahl's Aquablade does set it apart from the rest (the standard clippers, not so much). It's the only decent showerproof trimmer I've been able to find. It's just a shame it doesn't support more cutting guides.
