This is still a pretty good deal for Xbox/Microsoft credit though. Good for purchasing games/accessories through Microsoft.
-Do you think your son will want to play online multi-player games? Then he'll need a gold subscription as well, which means Gamepass Ultimate would be better. If not, regular Gamepass would be fine.
-How long did you plan on keeping the subscription? If only a month or if you're planning only on subscribing at short periods at a time (like one month here and there), then buying this $100 gift card and subscribing through the console would be fine. However, if you're planning on subscribing for a year or more, then you could save a lot more money by buying codes and possibly converting to Gamepass Ultimate if your son needs it.
Say you buy this $100 gift card. If you were to get regular Gamepass a month at a time: At $9.99/month + tax, you'll probably get around 9 months of gamepass.
However, if you buy Xbox Gold codes on a site like CDKeys (currently approximately $4.50/month) and take advantage of the $1 upgrade to Gamepass Ultimate that Microsoft offers, you could potentially get around 16 months for the same $86.88 you would spend on this deal. That's how a lot of people get Gamepass Ultimate for 3 years (max allowed) at a time.
Some random things to remember:
-Gamepass games can only be played with an active subscription, so you never own the games, even if they're downloaded to your console.
-Gamepass games come and go, so just because a game is available now, doesn't mean it will be available in a month or two. (Microsoft 1st party games are usually safe though)
-Gamepass Ultimate also comes with cloud gaming, which is kind of cool when you don't want to download a game or don't have space to download a game. You can also stream on your smart phone and play compatible games away from home.
I know that's a lot to digest, but the main thing you need to figure out is if he'll need gold to play online multi-player and how long you plan on keeping the subscription
You can also use Xbox/Microsoft gift cards/credit to buy most things on the Microsoft store, including computers, accessories, among other things.
