There's actually no hard scientific evidence to backup the negative claims. All of the studies use words such as "suspected", "possible", etc. If the claims were true, these products have been on the market long enough that actual data should've appeared. For now it's just a witch hunt.

Show me a reputable organization with conclusive scientific data and I'll change my mind.
Aspartame is not harmful and is approved by hundreds of global food regulation bodies. It has nothing to do with the USA - it is just a safe, extremely well-studied ingredient that is not harmful in food.

Aspartame. Artificial sweetener, it's in a lot of things now.

Are there any comparable products with stevia instead of a harmful sweetener?

Not stevia but the one I use has xylitol which is good for your teeth.

Technically the alcholol sugars were flagged as "possible" like six months before aspartame.

Aspartame is not one of them. Aspartame is deemed safe by all EU markets and their scientific bodies. And not that I believe you're an authority on studies, but Aspartame has been on the market for several decades. More than 40 years of science have not found it to cause harm.

I wouldn't presume just because something is naturally occurring that it is relatively or absolutely safe.

There are many dangerous naturally occurring organic compounds in plants, such as atropine in belladonna and digoxin in digitalis. Botulinum toxin and cyanide are also both naturally occurring. Smoke from a wood fire is just as dangerous as cigarette smoke.

There is nothing wrong with regular sugar. In moderation, for otherwise healthy adults (meaning those without conditions where it should be avoided, such as those that are hyperglycemic) it is perfectly safe, and our metabolic pathways are optimized to burn it. Even consuming too much water, or water of too low osmolarity, can be dangerous. There are so many multivariate interactions non endogenous compounds may be involved in, we should avoid as many as possible, as often as possible.

* I've been preaching avoidance of artificial sweeteners for 15 years. Slowly, evidence has emerged on many showing their dangers, from blood clot risks to DNA damage, and that's just recently.

* I'm not dispensing healthcare advice, but am retorting on the relevant biology
