Unable to view new messages posted to a thread

In last week's T-Mobile Tuesdays thread, I cannot view posts made after sdtacos250's post on 04-12-2024 at 06:36 PM PDT, even though my subscribed threads feed indicates there are six unread messages in the thread. I was able to find four of the posts but the other two remain elusive. Why can't they be seen in the thread? (Viewing in Classic mode.)

You're not alone on this one! I thought it expired today, not last night. Doh!

Unfortunately, this can sometimes (rarely) happen with certain threads. Generally, the fix is to switch between 30 and 45 posts per page, and that usually gets them to show up. I think switching to redesign also generally allows you to see any missing posts. In this case, neither of those fixes are working for me. We'll have to get this ticketed and see if someone can look into this, but another workaround is to click (above the thread) Thread Tools > Show Printable Version and then go to the last page to see any missing posts there.

Good tip on the Show Printable Version workaround. I discovered I was also able to see the "missing" posts by switching my Thread Display Mode to Linear - Newest First. However, that's not a persistent solution as the posts vanish from view again after reverting to Linear - Oldest First, although it does remove the thread from my unread threads feed (something that the Show Printable Version hack does not do).

It looks like the "delayed comments" issue is happening in another thread now (another really long TMo Tuesday thread). Comments seem to be delayed by a half hour or so. I'm not sure how the issue ends up getting fixed, but just figured I'd throw it out in this thread to document it if very sporadic issues like that are being tracked. (Mods have already been alerted in the thread, so this is just a secondary mention of it). I kept thinking that I saw a similar discussion in another similar thread from ages ago and there was a mention about something that needed to be "reindexed" or something, but I can't find anything llike that now. Missiethegal recommended switching the view to "Newest first" and that seemed to be another workaround as xlnc also mentioned, so it's not a big deal for me. But it does seem to confuse some people who think their comments are getting deleted or something. Smilie

I noticed that it started happening around 3 PM at post #506 in this thread, which looks it might be a similar post count as the other thread where it happened.

Anyway, here's the thread where it's happening now …

I also looked back through my old comments and saw another thread where it happened. That was noticed around comment #538, so also very close to the 500 mark in case that number might be where things start getting squirrelly.

Here's the third thread where it happened (from last year) …

Thank you for trying to look into this, and for pointing out the similarities between the threads. I have seen this issue happen with shorter threads, so I'm not sure if the long thread has something to do with it or if it's just easier to notice because so many posts are delayed.
I have added your findings to the ticket, so that the dev team can keep your theory in mind as they look into this.

Thank you again Smilie

Cool, thanks for checking it out. Yeah, just spitballing with any possible similarities … I know those infrequent one-off issues can be hard to track down with so few data points to base it on.

Interesting, here to complain about the MLS T-Mobile thread too. Yesterday I double posted, probably due to this delay. And I may have just triple posted, since my reply posts are not showing up at all. Using laptop browser, Firefox at the moment.

I've just noticed this same issue in another thread and am happy to see this discussion. The thread in my example is much shorter (just over 100 comments). I can't see the very last reply unless I switch to a non-logged-in view.

Thank you for the extra information. I added that linksys thread to the ticket as an additional example.

Another workaround is to click thread tools (in classic) or the three dot menu (in redesign) and then click Show Printable Version - that seems to show all of the "missing" posts.

Also going to throw out another possible "last resort" workaround coming at it from a different direction. Staff could possibly create a "Thread 2" with the same topic and open it up for the continued discussion and just close comments on the original thread and make the last comment be a link to the new "continued" thread.

Obviously that's not ideal and would probably stymie troubleshooting to some extent, but might be something to consider for a few of the busiest threads if a fix doesn't appear likely. It would be nice if you could just make a new blank thread and import all the current messages into it, although I'm guessing that's probably not an option. Smilie

Here is a thought:
  1. In the Linksys thread, the last post I *can* see is #105.
  2. The post I *cannot* see is #106.
  3. In the "classic" v1 UI, at 15 posts per page, this 106th post should start Page 8.
  4. But the thread is stuck at 7 pages.
  5. Here is the kicker: The pagination control indicates that there are only 103 comments (see the screenshot).
  6. Perhaps this undercount of posts is preventing the generation of the next, 8th page by the forum engine?
Also, this thread and the T-Mobile one are FP threads. This is probably a factor too because the FP post by the moderators affects the total comment count in some versions of the UI.

Ultimately, whatever is causing the undercount of comments in the pagination control is probably the cause of the hidden / missing posts.

I don't know if this is related, but lately I have not been able to link back to previous messages when clicking that link to a quoted comment either. In other words, when I click the little "curved arrow" ⤴️ link icon that appears after "Quote from Userxyz" it doesn't work. It usually just brings me to a different page, but doesn't actually show the quote and it's often not even the right page. It's like it just gets lost trying to find the link. And that seems to be happening in most all the threads, not just the delayed ones. Mentioning it here because it kind of seems like it might be a similar issue with a database index out of whack and not pointing to the right comment or something. (I'm using classic view, but not sure if it matters.)

Thanks for digging into it. If I set my posts per page to 30 or 45 in Classic, it shows enough pages and I can see that missing comment, but the total at the bottom is still incorrect. I can also see that post in Redesign at 15 posts per page, but that isn't always the case with these threads.

I personally truly have no idea what the issue is, but hopefully your theories help the devs narrow this down.

Thank you both again, I appreciate the time and thought that you've put into helping us squash this bug Smilie

Do you have examples of quote backlinks that aren't working for you? I just clicked on a bunch and they all worked for me. The mods that are currently on say that quote backlinks have been working for them too.
Do you have any extensions running? If you turn them off, do the links work correctly?
