Air has twice the RAM and much faster CPU, Air may get few years more lifetime
I will be a differing voice and say that primarily for kids, the non-air iPad is better value.
For most people, iPad is a toy for entertainment; you consume content with it.

Some people draw with one, some people edit photos and some replace their laptops with one… but mostly, people use them to surf the web, email, play games, and watch movies. And for that, it doesn't matter much whether you use the $250 or $999 iPad.

When the new iPad Air came out we have seen this deal pop up a few times. And unfortunately this model is in no mans land because of the 64gb storage. And it puts it too close to the base model iPad which is also in no mans land and both iPads have significant differences. So no one should buy the base model when the 5th gen air exists. Etc

But the 256GB model can often be found for less than the base model 6th gen. And again, performance difference between the M1 and M2 is less than 20% which doesn't make much of an improvement in the real world so it's not worth the extra money.
I wouldn't call 64GB no man's land. I barely use any storage on an iPad personally.

Good summary, want to add that M1 supports Apple AI - the local part of it later this year when new iPadOS is released.

I assume the local Apple AI workload will benefit from the higher spec CPUs... just a natural assumptions but we won't know until we get some reach benchmarks done.

M1 - 11 TOPS
M2 - 15.8
M3 - 19
M4 - 38 TOPS

Between this and the iPad 10, it's easy choice for me to pick the M1 variant since everything is better including compatible with other accessories and only $50 more comparing the list price of iPad 10. I don't wanna compare sales since they change to much when a deal comes out.

5th-gen Air has the M1 CPU, which is a more powerful version of the A14 CPU used in the 10th-gen iPad - both CPUs from 2020, so already 4 years old. 6th-gen Air has the M2 which is a slight upgrade and is 2 years' newer.

Air 5th gen has a slightly better screen (P3 color gamut, which means more & better colors; fully-laminated, which means a bit thinner, and anti-reflective coating).

Air 5th gen also has better hardware video decoding.

Apple Pencil support is a bit of a mess, so be careful about which Pencil you buy if you get one.

In size and weight they are actually almost identical!

Incidentally, the latest Mini falls about right in between them in performance (A15 CPU, which is faster than A14 but maybe not faster than M1?), close to Air in most other specs, but in my experience the Mini is far more usable in practice especially if you travel. I find the regular iPad size too big, but the 5th-gen Mini is much better to hold and carry around.

Went to my local Target and they did not honor the price match. Associate said that Target might be limiting Apple price matches from now on..

Maybe I meant to say something else. I think what I was trying to say, is the base model iPad is too close to the base mode 5th iPad Air in price and it's even more out of touch when you look at the price between the 256gb model versions between those two. It's the typical Apple tax everyone is confronted with all the time. All the base models that are remotely affordable come with too little storage and all the models that are actually worth owning are significantly more expensive.

If someone wanted
More than 64gb they would be shocked to see how close in price the 256gb iPad and air 5th gen is and it would make no sense to get the base model iPad 256gb

Hmmm. That's an over simplification. A lot of people who use iPads use very specialized apps that require some decent performance. Theres special book reading apps for example, where you will see a big difference in usability between the A14 chip and the M1 chip. Considering the base model iPad is 330$ and the air is 400$. It's not worth spending 330 when the 400$ air with the m1 is only a 70$ difference and it's leaps and bounds better in performance

This iPad Air 5th Gen lets you use the Apple Pencil 2 that magnetically sticks to the side of the iPad, just like the iPad Pro. The newer 6th gen moves the camera to the side, so you can't use the Apple Pencil 2 anymore and have to use one of the Apple Pencil models that plug in. So for those Apple Pencil users, this older 5th gen is better than the newer 6th gen, and more like the iPad Pro, which allows for magnet charging.

This will get the Apple Intelligence features of iOS 18. Min CPU requirement is M1. It also has more RAM, 8GB vs 4GB

If you don't care about Apple Intelligence down the road (which requires M1 chip that is in this iPad Air but not in regular iPad 10th gen), then the regular iPad 10.9 @ $250 is a great deal with veteran discount.

P.S. If you mean the $250 iPad 9th gen, then it's not a good deal even @ $250 as the chip already starts to struggle with current iPadOS 17.

I don't think so because the 5th gen and 6th gen air both have 8gb of ram. The M1 chip compared to the M2 chip is a performance improvement of about 20%, which in the real world will make no difference. Unless your really doing intensive tasks like video editing and even then you might see an improved render time of 10-20% at best which for things like that, isn't much of a difference.

The 64gb is okay, not great but the 6th gen air is 128gb is 200$ more. So you have to ask yourself. Is it worth spending a third of your budget on only a slightly faster and little more storage iPad?

OR
In my opinion you should get the 5th gen air with 256 GB, for 550 which is 50$ less than the 6th gen. And double the storage.

Glad to see a deal I can do a trade-in with. Got $165 for my iPad 9th gen. About what I would have gotten on ebay.

The best iPad for the money in my opinion. Especially if you can find it at $350, but even this price is well worth it!

Which is pretty far unrelated to the question of "Which one do I buy my kids?"
If he was asking about which model to buy for the point of purchase kiosk for his store, I'd tell him to ask the software vendor.

As for performance... Apple throttles the <bleep> out of their CPU's on the iPads. There's no way to compare the performance of an M1 or M2 running the MacOS to those same CPU's on iPads. While there are some things the iPad is very fast at, other things are painfully slow.

By a mile? Did you see where they said the primary user would be a child? Explain how a child will notice the features that make up the $150 price difference?
