Typical price is $27, bounces to $30 occasionally but never $50. Might as well save $2 if you need it though
I'm assuming most people are setting up VLAN to isolate their IoT devices from the rest of their network which you need a managed switch to do and the TL-SG108 is an unmanaged switch.

Just a note, I purchased the 5 port version of this a few months ago (sg105). It is not hot swappable if that matters to you

This is a 1Gbps switch, which should be sufficient for most users.

However, if the newer 2.5Gbps standard is important to you, consider looking for an alternative.

the 2.5 Gbps is currently $99 which is not cheap IMHO.

What do you guys and gals do with this TL-SG108E switch that can't be done with a cheaper TL-SG108 (also on sale)? Just curious if there is some optimization I'm missing out on in my network. TIA

Can you elaborate? Are you talking about the settings for the managed pots and swapping devices out?

Thanks, makes sense. I usually just dedicate a guest network on my router to IoT devices, and isolate it from everything else.

The 5 port version of this switch is the SG105E, not the SG105. The E suffix version of these switches include some managed switch capabilities, including being VLAN aware.

D-Link, TP-link almost OK but not all models, need to check before buying and kinda lottery with quality, I personally prefer to choose better.
Stay away from TRENDnet and Tenda, they pretends to looks OK but really not.
And for sure even don't think about bazillion Chinese junk (YuLinca, MokerLink etc)
Better to go with reliable brands like Linksys, Netgear, HPE, Ubiquity, Cisco.
You don't need surprises like big latency, lost connections etc.

In other thread $28 Netgear, for example.

Do you mean this switch (see link)? The linked switch does not have any managed switch functions, which is why it's cheaper.

In a home situation, these are really cool until you factory reset them and they start granting DHCP requests that can't work with your home router with a DNS server that can't work.

Oh, and they grab 192.168.1.1 by default which happens to be your home router's IP address.

Sigh.
