This was one of Adam Savage from Tested's favorite things this year. Tempted to buy one just to have it around, but certainly don't need it.
I've used it to:
1) Sweat copper pipe connections.
2) Remove rusty bolts on cars/trucks.
3) Finish off crème brûlée.
4) Smoke cocktails.
What I've used before for steak searing is a cheap harbor freight weed torch. That sucker is basically a flamethrower but works really well if you set the steak outside on your grill

Is this more for crafts vs an auto shop tool for getting off rusty bolts?

I've mostly seen these used for soldering large connections and applying heat shrink.

now where are those creme brulees....

Thought handy, you can do most of the same things with a good old $15 torch head. Just a bit awkward with holding the tank too. EDIT: Does sound like the firepoint is more adjustable too. Probably better for fine work.

For searing steaks, you're better off with a cast iron pan (or a lot of people recommend charcoal chimneys).

If you're trying to do other smaller culinary sears, you probably want a Searzall [amazon.com] instead, as it (if used correctly) makes sure you avoid any propane flavor on what you're searing by acting more like a precision broiler than just a flame. But can be a bit too small of an area for steak, opinions really get divided for that (I mean, I use mine for filet mignon, but not like I'm making a lot either).

This works well for soldering copper in tight spaces. At least on 1/2 and 3/4"
