5-1/2" circular saw is just too small. I like the electric brake feature though.

not too small for craft woodworking. In fact even construction contractors notoriously say that they never thought the smaller saws would be useful but once they got one it became the most used.

5-1/2" is big enough for sheet goods and 2x studs and such, which I would think are the most common things to cut with a circular saw. Obviously, if you're tackling larger hunks of wood, you'll be needing a larger saw.

This is a great addition for a homeowner or a pro too. I got it as part of the $199 10-pc set from Lowe's and it is easily the most used saw in my arsenal. Lightweight, powerful, brushless, and battery lasts a good while. I'll put it right up there with the M12 stuff. The Skil Powercore 12v brushless tools are like getting the red "fuel" versions for much less.

It is the same saw but the Lowe's one is a bare tool. The Amazon one comes with a 4ah battery and a charger for the same price.

The battery makes this a good deal if you already have some tools in the Skil 12v ecosystem. But if all you're looking for is a cheap circular saw just get a corded 7 inch (Skil has one for $50) or consider Skil's 20v 6-inch saw with the 2ah battery instead at the same price.

You get so much more power and flexibility with the bigger saws; it beats out the convenience of cordlessness. I wouldn't put a lot of faith in a 5-1/2inch saw with a 12v battery to cut anything thicker than plywood cleanly and consistently. Every such tool I've had the opportunity to use would frequently bind or bog down when cross cutting 2-by boards (and forget about knots or beveled cuts). I'm convinced they're designed to be nothing more than fodder for cordless tool bundles.

I'm intrigued because the blade is on the left side - would enable me to clearly see where I'm cutting. Both of my Hitachi HPT saws have the blade on the right side - so the motor on the left side of the blade blocks the view of the wood piece.

I bought one from Lowes for the 4ah battery to compliment the 10 tool kit that was 150. Tried it the saw today to demo an old bench and not bad, the blade did bind a couple of times, but it came in handy. Never gonna replace my Milwaukee fuel m18, but it's nice in a pinch.

Assuming you're right-handed, a blade left saw does allow for a good view of the blade, but it also shoots all the sawdust towards you, will put the large part of the shoe and weight of the saw on the cutoff piece, and puts your body in-line with any potential saw kickback.

I totally forgot about that part - the saw dust part. Really good insight - thanks! Whenever I use my tracksaw - it's always hooked up to a vaccum system so it's never an issue. But I imagine if I'm using this circular saw outside for making just 1-2 cuts, it wouldn't be hooked to a vac system.
