I assume you're new to watches so I'll explain a bit more. Here's a TLDR incase none of this interests you haha.

TLDR: not a knockoff as much as it is a homage. Has fancy ticking bits inside that are very complicated and designed in house at orient unlike most manufacturers at this price. Has a very good glass (crystal) on the top for the price that is difficult to scratch.

Your comment is technically true but the word "knockoff" isn't necessarily accurate. There are hundreds (maybe even thousands) of submariner inspired watches and the submariner itself was inspired by the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms.

There are many ranges of submariner inspired watches though, in the higher end you have watches like the Omega Seamaster in the $10-20k range, on the low end you have something like the Casio Duro (or marlin) that you can get as low as $20.

In the middle range you have a lot of options like the very popular Seiko 007 and this guy, the Orient.

Now, the main reasons this Orient is popular (and a good deal at this price) are the dial, the movement, and the crystal.

The dial is very cleanly designed and has subtle accents with powerful luminescent hands and markers.

The movement is an in house designed Japanese automatic movement which means the watch is "charged" by a pendulum of sorts while the wearer goes about their day. It also has a date complication which adds another level of complexity to intricate little bits in the watch. In general automatic movements are very complicated to create so Orient doing this in house is respectable. Japanese movements are also very great value for their money and sit right under Swiss movements in terms of complexity, longevity, accuracy, and precession.

To top it off the watch has a sapphire crystal which is much tougher and offers much more clarity than its mineral counterparts. Although sapphire crystals aren't expensive (very popular in the watch community to just buy them and replace them on watches that come with mineral), sapphire is generally harder to find from the factory on lower priced watches like this one. Some brands like to try to entice you into buying their higher end models with "hey this one has sapphire" haha.

So, is it a cheaper alternative to the submariner? Yes. Is it a cheap watch in terms of quality and features? Definitely not.

I would get this if I didn't recently buy the newer Mako (version with sapphire). I love Orient for the value and the durability of their movements, but the bracelets are pretty chintzy. I replaced mine with a rubber strap right after getting it, knowing ahead of time that I would. If you have any nicer watches and are used to good steel bracelets, you may not be happy with the clanging hallow bracelets these come with.

I'm wearing an old Orient that has been discontinued for probably a decade, and still runs decent. The Mako would be a great mod starter. Or just wear as a desk diver. By the way Orient started my addiction.

I remember way back probably around 10 years or so when Orient watch MSRP was $100-$200 and they used to have 50% coupons that would occasionally be posted here; those were the days

Same. 43mm is a bit too big for me. I try to stay under 40mm.

Brother this is an orient watch…. It's a decent priced automatic diver watch. What are you expecting for 200$? A Rolex submariner goes for 10k. The only issue with this watch is the garbage bracelet
