I think we're at a weird spot where you can basically flip a coin between running AM4 vs AM5... Good deals on AM5 can be had and the DDR5 RAM costs aren't what they were a few months ago... I still really like my 5700x3d and 5800x3d builds and could likely skip AM5. But if I had to buy everything brand new, it just makes slightly more sense to go AM5 now.

If you're not a power gamer, this CPU will suit you just fine, some will tell you that you need x3d sku but not sure that's true if you're looking purely at value. Will largely depend on your GPU and what resolution you're trying to run.

Hope that helps ya out!

Little help? I'm not a power gamer, but I do have an extensive Steam collection. Just Office applications other than that. Is it worth building a new PC with AM4 socket these days? I'm sure AM4 mobos and CPUs are a great value right now, but will I be upset I opted for value in a year or two? Or stick with AM5?

Thank you for the reply.

My current rig is too old to save anything. Building all new and haven't selected a GPU yet. I'll be running 1440p resolution though.

We're on SD, so clearly value is important to me, but I'm also willing to pay if it makes sense. Some may say I should go big because I hold onto my rigs 8+ years. But going big usually means an ultra premium price, and honestly I simply don't need that much horsepower.

this cpu is ok. very unremarkable, it just works. never seems to limit my rtx3080 and never causes any issues that need troubleshooting.

i run it at -40 bios undervolt, 65c limit. it stays under that and never makes any noise.

i never really thought about it since i put it in. and set those setting.

Based on what you are saying, AM5 might be a better suited for you. If budget is a limiting factor, you could consider AM4 and use the savings for your GPU as most of the times GPU is the limiting factor. Especially if you want to do 1440p.
I would recommend using something like pcpartpicker and building out a AM4 computer and a AM5 computer based on your budget and see which one might be most value for you.
P.S. Look into 7500F from aliexpress which performs very similar to the CPU posted but costs like $40 less

AM4 is still enough for anything you throw at it. That being said it's a dead platform. AM5 is supposed to be supported till 2027. It's honestly not that much more expensive to go AM5 over AM4 especially if you cut some corners. Just doesn't make sense unless you already have at least two AM4 compatible components.

Your looking at around $240 for a AM4 5600x combo vs around $340 for a AM5 7600x combo. If you don't mind rolling the dice with a AliExpress 7500f you can knock another $50 off the AM5 combo. I ordered one and got it sealed in a blister pack within two weeks and it worked great. If you went with the cheapest A620 chipset board and a AliExpress 7500f you are about in the AM4 combo range.

What gpu are you running? I am in that weird spot, gaming rig has a am4 mobo with a 5600x and a 3080 + 32 gigs of ram. I really want to upgrade but it feels like any sensible upgrade will cost $400+.

Thank you. AM5 being supported until 2027 means nothing to me. Once built, I probably won't touch it until after 2030. That said, those small price differences aren't enough to justify the older platform. 100 bucks over all the parts ain't a big deal.

Ideally, I'll get my hands on a Ryzen 7 9800X3D within the next couple months. Yep stock is zero now. Yep it's not cheap either. But, it's benching as top 3 if not 1 CPU on Earth, for under $500 MSRP. I may not need that kind of power, but the value is crazy for a top-tier flagship CPU. So I was debating waiting and blowing a wad to build with it VERSUS a more value-oriented build, like maybe this CPU . Which are both AM5 anyway. 😄

I've got a 7900xt on a 5800x3d with 32gb ram and an old rx590 still running in a 5700x3d with 32gb.

If I was in your shoes, the best upgrade would likely be to plop down for a 5700x3d to replace the 5600x and let that carry you until next gen AM6.

After that I'd start saving for an eventual GPU upgrade, but 3080 is still decently capable today.

If you're not touching it for 5+ years then it makes even more sense to go AM5. I'd go with a mid range board and the fastest CPU you can get. Even the best on AM4 will probably really show it's age in the next couple years. But if you go 7600x now you have the option to drop a cheap 9800x3d in it in a couple years if you don't get it to begin with.

Solid advice, thank you and happy new years!

Its amazing how well the old 500 series has held up over the years. I dont know about modern AAA games, but it was such a good 1080 card from the jump!
