IMO celebrities didn't have to directly serve to be able to help the war effort. Bud Abbot and Lou Costello wouldn't have passed most (probably any) physicals but they went on a grueling war bond tour and raised millions for the effort. Lou caught rheumatic fever on the tour which was likely a cause of his early death. Wayne better served with his Movies. He did in fact want to serve. One of his best friends was James Arness (Matt Dillon from Gunsmoke). He said Duke did indeed feel guilty for not serving in the Military but gave us so much more by inspiring our Troops with his Movies.
Both Island in the Sky and The High and the Mighty were out of circulation for about 20 years because of legal issues. My father told me about these film and was disappointed that we couldn't watch them together. Thankfully they were released in 2005 and I purchased them for my Father two years before his passing.
I agree 100% that celebrities didn't have to serve to support the effort. And Wayne may have indeed felt guilty about it, but he applied for the deferment himself. No one forced him to. So that guilt must have came after the fact.

But I always find it funny that he's looked up to by many as this prototypical tough guy, when other actors like, Jimmy Stewart, served voluntarily, Stewart tried to enlist and was turned away for being underweight. He could have let it go, satisfied that he at least tried. But instead he worked with a studio trainer to bulk up and retake the physical. He passed, was selected for pilot training, and wound up flying 20+ combat missions over Nazi Germany. He continued to serve in the Reserve after. He even accompanied a bombing mission in Vietnam, and retired as a 2-star General. But Stewart is remembered as this skinny, warbly-voiced, everyman. It's almost like Hollywood depictions of toughness and valor have little to do with real life bravery and heroism.....

But there's no reason to dislike Wayne for his lack of service when there are so many real reasons to dislike him, like being an open racist and homophobe (see his 1971 Playboy interview), a snowflake who got so triggered by a Native American woman's mere presence at the Oscars that he tried to physically assault her, cheating in all three of his failed marriages, including allegations of trafficking a teenage girl from Mexico during his first marriage.

John Wayne was a piece of crap, not because he didn't serve in the military, but because he was a piece of crap.

Thanks. Which ones are HD only ? Don't want to assume that only the ones with physical 4K releases are UHD and the rest are HD only

On Vudu/Fandango at Home, only True Grit and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance are available in 4k UHD. But if you buy them in the bundle, you will only get them in HDX quality.

I always find it funny seeing John Wayne in war movies considering he dodged the draft. Famous for the Sands of Iwo Jima, yet never bothered to go there until well after the war.

His westerns are classic tho

"John Wayne was a piece of crap, not JUST because he didn't serve in the military, but because he was a piece of crap." FIFY.

All of that aside, IMO, I think he is the most overrated actor ever. He is the very definition of "wooden," which should not be confused with stoic, distant, etc. I love old movies and actively avoid anything he is in. He's just a terrible actor. But I guess people at the time (and even now) were into the macho, rugged type, regardless of how believable they were.

Whenever I see him in a movie, I am immediately reminded that I am watching a movie, which then seems like some second-rate acting school where they are giving the flunky a chance. It's really noticeable when it is around actual good actors. I wonder what they must have thought, especially the female actors that were probably paid a fraction of what he made.

He might be a good actor but, he was outright racist, a bigot, and a supporter of Native American genocide, some said he was an open Nazi.

Thanks, any downvote, meaning another bigot who supported this bigot and a racist.
No matter how you spin at the end of the day, you cannot hide an open racist and a Nazi sympathizer by saying just look at his acting skills.

It's funny how I had never heard any of these negative things about John Wayne until now. I've seen most if not all of his movies in color. I had heard he was a patriotic conservative American rather than an evil racist Nazi as stated in this thread. Considering I've heard the same thing said about virtually every conservative, especially Trump, I will take everything said with big grains of salt.

Big Jake is still my favorite western. So many great quotable lines in it. The westerns bundle is by far the best.

I wish we'd have access to UHD copies with these packs. I know not all the movies are available in 4k yet, so I may just wait until we get a pack of 4k releases since we're seeing plenty of remasters each year of prominent films such as these.

Great deal otherwise if you're okay with 1080p / HD.
