looking to upgrade router, but I can't convince myself to get wifi6 when wifi6e (with the true 6Ghz third band unlike this fake tri-band which just doubles the 5Ghz band) is about the same price now. wifi7 is just too daggum expensive atm.

I bought this during a previous iteration of the sale at a much higher price. I installed openwrt on one to test and it works fine. The stock fw is pretty limited settings wise. Also there have not been any fw updates for years.
It has a quad core 2.2ghz processor and 1gb RAM which puts it somewhere between a raspberry pi 3 and 4 except there's no GPU.

Compared to the mx4200/4300 it also has one more Ethernet port.

No DDWRT support. I have two MX4300's running as Mesh and I wanted to add two more. I'll wait for the MX4300's to come back on Woot.

Both ddwrt and openwrt are available. But they are not stable versions. They are in progress , so should be available sometime in the future. I had a hard time getting openwrt working, but dd-wrt worked in the first go.

I am using linksys ac2400 two nodes. If I purchase this set, will I be able to extend the wifi by adding those 2 old nodes to this new wifi6 set? I know whoever connects to ac1200 node will be slow.

The LN1301/MX4300 that was on firesale earlier has 1GB RAM and 2GB of ROM as well. It has twice the flash storage as the MX5300 (what's featured here).

From a pure numbers game you're getting a quarter of the ROM size but a faster processor and higher wireless speeds, plus one extra port on the router itself.

Otherwise it appears to be very similar to the LN1301/MX4301 from a cursory view. DD-WRT and Open-WRT support appears to be preliminary, but there appears to be more development on the Open-WRT side for the MX5300, funny enough.

Which DD-WRT release/snapshot works with the MX5300?
So far the latest DD-WRT builds for the MX4300 (LN1301, aka the $15 deal from earlier this year) are rock solid now.

You have that backwards, LN1301 has 2GB RAM and 1GB flash spilt into two banks.

Grabbed 2 kits for $98 (4 units), which is insane considering the launch price of $300 per unit. Currently have 3 of the TP-Link Decco 5300, but lack of web interface has been driving me crazy and also trying to get rid of TP-Link stuff after recent..... issues.

I have 4 of these in the house. They barely crack 500M about 2meters away from them. I have them using wired backhaul on 2.5G network. My actual speed is 1G (my wired network is better by design) but the wireless never cracks past 600/700M where as wired the units tell me they get 1000M all the time.
They are fairly stable but speed wise don't count on them past 500
Also note the third band is not 6G. It is yet another 5G network meant for dedicated wireless mesh between nodes themselves so the backhaul if not wired, does not take BW away from your end devices.
