Good article from Tom's Guide [tomsguide.com] about XBox, PS5, or dedicated 4K player. Sony has always been the defacto standard since DVD for creating and setting the standards and integrating into their systems from the PS2 onward. The DVD player in the PS2 is what brought in a good part of the DVD revolution from VHS in the early 2000s. There are lots of complaints it seems about XBox Series X having issues with 100GB triple-layer Blu-rays, which now constitute a growing percentage of 4K movies... so there's that issue. Neither XBS or PS5 support Dolby Vision, another growing standard in the HDR10+ & Dolby Vision enhanced 4K media. And dedicated Blu-ray & 4K players are just built to take advantage of your TV features and settings. As Tom's Guide puts it, XBS and PS5 are game systems first, and afterwards it'll try its best with your "Jurassic Park" Blu-ray.
Everything has a "next best thing" whether it's phones or computers or tvs. Even cars and houses. There is always going to be a something that is considered "better", you just have to find your level. There is no point getting bothered with that concept because it's just consumerism and that will never change. But you can find your personal level and be happy.

I have only 4k tvs, I have a 4k projector, I have 4k blu-ray players. However, I still collect dvds, Blu-ray's along with some 4ks. I always look up a 4k to see if the image quality is a big enough increase to support the higher price. Many times it's not. I have 4500 physical films and only like 150 4ks. There are tons of films that only have dvd releases. There are brand new films (such as 2024s challengers) that don't even release in 4k, only BR. But there are also 4k that come out that are worse than the blu-ray (such as Terminator 2).

If I've learned anything from my collecting it's that there will always be another movie to come out or a new technology that releases (8k tvs etc) but as long as you know your own limit you can be very happy and content without spending tons of money and time on the inevitable "next best thing"
Regular Blu-ray discs and DVDs are still releasing for most theatrical release movies. 4K discs are labeled as such and usually have black plastic cases. There is no 4K TV that would be incompatible with a 4K player. It could limit the quality of the visuals and audio.

Is XBOX or PS5 better 4K bluray player? And no i dont want a standalone bluray player which I know is likely superior, but dont want to spend X amount on something that just does that. At least I can game on the game systems.

XBOX i hear can emulate everything and since there really isnt any next gen games, is that the better buy?

Sony has a ton of PlayStation exclusive games that are among the best games of the past few generations of gaming systems.

For Disney movies, you may or may not get digital with the package. If included, digital has a chance of being already used. It can be a crap shoot. I don't fault this with Hamilton Book. I had the same experience with the Disney Rewards program. I believe Disney re-shrinkwrap returned/used movies. Hamilton takes clearance/liquidated items from retailers for their online store. I remember seeing a lot of similar titles that Big Lots have in their bargain bin. It just looks like now they're getting leftovers from the Disney Rewards which was just discontinued.

are non-4k blurays even a thing anymore? I have a very nice 4k TV, but not the type that supports these kind of movies.

Never understood the mindset.
Buy best content, buy pricey display to take advantage of it, spends hundreds( if not more) on surround system to do the same.
Then use a device that's designed for games but will play movie disc that won't take full advantage of all that!!!!

On top of that they know better( ie "I know is likely superior") but continue ask over and over again is it better, expecting a different result!!!

I'm happy with both for different reasons. PS5 has exclusives but XBOX Gamepass is cool and I use it for Kodi. You can also find gamekeys often cheaper for Xbox. They're probanly the same/similar if used for Bluray player

My personal experience: The blu-ray player software in the PS5 is unbelievably clunky and glitchy. It almost feels like they tried to make it a terrible experience so as not to cannibalize their standalone player market.
