Put more simply, United is discounting Economy tickets to LHR down to 25k from the usual 35k.

Depending upon your airport there may be non-stops available at the reduced 25k rate. March spring break had no direct options discounted to 25k left for me, but there were still plenty of direct flights in February at the 25k rate. Weird to see the small fee on the outbound ($5) but the remainder on the return ($191), which I'm sure someone can explain.

Note that you'll need an electronic travel authorization (ETA) upon arrival this year which costs £10 (see here [gov.uk]).

Unfortunately this discount comes about a month before I've earned enough miles for the family. At the same time, I've soured a bit on London given that it's excellent as a destination but no longer as convenient for connections to other countries after Brexit as a U.S. traveler.

Good luck!

This wording confused me but I realized through United that this should have read as:

Tax on takeoff from the UK is about $190, but none for landing. This means you might consider an advance purchase of a chunnel train ticket and fly out of Paris CDG airport.

London airport tax for takeoff is an hilarious and offensive practice that mocks tourists to stay away from spending money in the U.K. I have obliged ever since they jacked it up. Let's spend our money elsewhere in non-Brexit Europe.

This was a go-to option for me (typically ending my trip at Amsterdam or Frankfurt to get ample cheap United options on return). However, the new customs regime queues as a non-EU / non-UK traveler were un-fun enough for me the last trip (traveling with small children) that I've basically sworn off transits via London. A great destination, but no longer friction-free.

Good luck!
