Today we announced updates to some of our policies and benefits within our fare bundles. Sharing them with you is important to us, as we're working to offer you more choices to create travel experiences that fit your needs.

Updates to Checked Baggage Policy

We will offer two free checked bags to Rapid Rewards® A-List Preferred Members and Customers traveling on Business Select fares. We will also offer one free checked bag to A-List Members and other select Customers. In addition, Southwest will credit one checked bag for Rapid Rewards Credit Cardmembers. All remaining Customers will pay to check their first and second bags, and we will continue to charge for the third and fourth checked bags. Changes will apply to flights booked on or after May 28.

Updates to Our Fare Bundles

We're updating the benefits of our fares bundles in phases. Whether you're looking for a lower price with fewer perks, or more benefits for added flexibility, you'll have the choice to pick what works best for your trip.

Phase 1: Beginning this month, we increased our Rapid Rewards earn ratio on our Business Select fares and lowered the earn ratio on our Wanna Get Away® and Wanna Get Away Plus™ fares. We will also begin to vary our redemption rates across our fare products on some high- and low-demand travel periods.

Phase 2: Beginning May 28, we will introduce a new Basic fare. This new Basic fare will be our lowest price point and will have less flexibility than other fares. Additionally, we will be adding expiration dates to our Flight Credits, which will vary based on which fare you choose to purchase.

The chart below gives you a full picture of the revised fare products as of May 28, 2025, ranging from most flexible to value-first.

We recognize these changes may be a disappointment to some, but know we're committed to building a Southwest that will continue to offer you low fares, convenient flights to destinations you want, and a travel experience that is rewarding. You can count on the Heart of Southwest, our People, to guide you through the changes and welcome you on your next journey with their friendly, award-winning Customer Service.

I want to downvote this because of all of these horrible changes for the consumer, but upvoting because it's important.

I have absolutely no reason to choose southwest anymore (personal opinion)

Agreed and agreed.

I have the credit card so that's one free bag. I also have the business card so I wonder if having 2 cards would give me two free bags? And would adding a second cardholder give them one free bag? How is this even determined if I'm not paying with that card -- do you just show it at check-in, or pay with the card and it's reimbursed???

Anyway, with their sky high fares and real sales lacking, plus less deals on gift cards I'm about through with them too. We're down to the last of our points from sign up bonus a couple of years ago and companion pass just expired -- been debating about doing the deal again but this whole deal plus knowing the other upcoming changes with seat charges shows the competition is gone...which is not good for the consumer.

100% with you. I wanted people to downvote it because of the content, but need the upvotes for awareness.

i'm pretty sure you have to pay with your cc to get the free baggage. it wouldn't make sense for them otherwise since they seem to be trying to maximize profits here

their prices have been increasing, even with the gc option, they're not very competitive for me against other airlines.... gone are the good ol days

Sad. It's just another airline now. I just checked the fare and they're much more than other airlines.

Sounds like it is a bill credit, "Southwest will credit one checked bag for Rapid Rewards Credit Cardmembers." Pay with your Rapid Rewrds card and you'll get a credit back. If this is the case, adding a second cardholder will not help as the account would receive one checked bag credit.

They could have just as easily raised their fares, like they regularly do already, but everthing seems to be going the way of hidden, tack on fees right before you submit the purchase. That way, the advertised price you see up front is still very attractive, but also much lower than the total price paid at the end.

So if you pay with points, even if you are a credit card holder, assuming you book a lowly, scum-of-the-earth wanna get away fare, you probably have to pay for one bag.

I note that credits that "never expire" now do as well.

I asked about someone travelling with you if you have a RR Card - this was their response on X:

@SouthwestAir
Rapid Rewards Credit Cardmembers & up to 8 Customers on the same reservation as the Cardmember will receive one free standard checked bag (size & wight limits apply). (2/2) - Allison
