Bought one of these previously. They are a blast. N64 support is hit or miss, but PS1 and below play great.

You will want to have a new actual branded SD card, and load with ArkOS. Instructions here: https://joeysretrohandhelds.com/g...tup-guide/

I got this for my 4 year old. He loves playing platformers, so I loaded it up with some classics plus Pico 8. I don't have to worry about microtransactions or him seeing something sketchy on YouTube, but I also don't have to sit right there watching his every move.

There are lots of options out there, but at this price point this is one of the more powerful cheap devices. To get something better you're looking at 60-75$.

These are fun devices (I have the RGB30). But be prepared to do some upfront programing to get the best use from them, and invest in a couple of good quality micro SD cards.

Probably this. R36s is dirt cheap on AliEx (~23) but the main buttons are a bit hollow feeling with too much travel so it's hard to tell exactly when it actuates. Vertical is also a bit less comfortable but it has more of a retro look.

I don't have this one but an X55 (also from PK) and the buttons are much better. You don't have to do "programming" like the other comment said, but a bit of research. For example you need to flash a community-based OS image (be careful you can delete your external storage very easily) onto most of these with a high quality SD card and typically throw out the stock cheap card. After that you'll need to source your own roms since the pre installed ones could have issues.

Right. If you're almost sold on this, I'd definitely watch a video or two on any of the RG35XX models that seems to handle some of the more recent retro systems a little better.

For those interested in buying a retro handhelds, Aliexpress will be having a 15th anniversary sale starting on the 17th. You will find good deals on any number of retro handhelds at that time.

For something similar in this price range, I'd recommend the Anbernic brand over Powkiddy.

is this ideal for introducing a kid to video games? I'd like to introduce them the classics and slowly let them get into the newer stuff.
