No, those claims are unfounded. It's not anything recent either, it was just a few forums posts from the past 2-3 years about users having issues seemingly after an update. Louis Rossman just now made a video about it which is why it's getting attention but he's waiting on official response from Brother. They still do not require OEM toner

Man what happened to the $100 printer
Same exact price at Staples, and at Staples you get $62 back in Staples rewards money, making it a much better deal.

I'm riding high with the L-2710DW. Paid $200 Amazon back in '22. It's been a pleasure to use. One weird thing happened. It went into Sleep Mode and nothing I did would bring it out. Turns out there is some secret code you have to input. lol I had to Google it to figure it out.

Would you please reply with that link if you come across it again?

I have the 2700DW, and the scan FEEDER causes streaks on the images. (and copies). Laying a flat page manually on the glass does not cause this. I tried something I Googled a while back, but it did not help. Anyone else have experience fixing this?

A speck of dirt on the 'little' glass pane (the one that the feeder runs the paper across) can cause this. Since the paper feeds across the glass, just a tiny dot will result in a line on the scan/copy.
Since it's likely to be tiny, it might be hard to see, so, take your paper with a line through it and line it up with the glass and you'll likely see what's causing it. Clean that off and you should be good to go.

ETA: If it's more than just a line, it's still going to be that little glass/section where the paper feeds across it, so, match up the parts that look bad to where it'll be on that glass and clean it.

Rarely ever buy ink, so I guess they only really make money on the printer.

Still rocking my 2280 I bought back in the day for $120. Inflations a bitch.
Mine takes generic toner no probs and never updated the software package, cause it works well printing and scanning, so why fix something that aint broke? The Brother is like the Toyota of printers folks.

I'd recommend against signing up for the Refresh Print subscription. While it's not expensive, if you cancel they will prevent you from printing even if you've more than paid for the "free" toner in monthly subscription fees. You'd have to get a different toner cartridge to then print.

I forget which model I bought way back, but it was a Brother all in one laser printer like this and it was one of my better purchases. The only regret I have is the one I bought didn't do duplex scanning, but I could've gotten one with it for not all that much more. I scan my bills for my records each month, and more of those have info on both sides now so I'm really kicking myself over not getting duplex scanning. I've done so much printing on the included toner cartridge and it's also been very handy for doing copies.

Yes...update caused unrecognizable generic toner on my Brother MFC-l3770cdw, thus the response for 1st post. It appears that the OEM toners have chips without batteries, but the generic toners have batteries powering their chips, in case of power failures. Unfortunately, my cats turned off my printer and it was not "ON" for a few days and the battery died in one of the toners. Replaced the battery and it still failed. Only remedy was to buy OEM toner with NO battery behind the chip that verifies the authenticity. I blame the cats.

Bought a hl-2280dw 13 years ago for $80 and it's still going.

I actually think it might be the only electronic purchase that I've made in my life that has lasted as long as it did. If this is just as good, it's worth the asking price.

naturally, now that I've said this, it's probably on death row
That's when and how much I bought mine for. It has setup/interface quirks and hurdles when you have to network it again. I wish PC interface worked as well as android does for it.

I think I replaced the drum. Toner is cheap. I don't print as much as I used to, but when I do, it just works.

Thanks for the info, Looks like manufacturers are making it even harder to use non-OEM options

LOL I am in the same boat. I don't use my printer much these days. Due to the automatic paper feeder issue I just use the manual feeder. It is a solid workhorse. It continues to serve me after almost 12 years.

Quote from aku11 :
I have exactly the same problem. Plastic pin broke on a feeder and only manual feed works now.
I don't print much, so holding off for a good deal on a new printer.
Quote from relentless :
How did u fix it. I have an issue where the paper does not get pulled automatically and it jams. I had to manually feed ( painful) paper. youtube video how I need to open the printer and fix the spring i the roller that loads the paper from the tray during priting. Is that what you are referring to?
