There are several excellent custom firmwares for the Anbernic XX line, such as MuOS, Knulli, MinUI, and a modified stock OS as an alternative.

This is an incredible price for a great throw-in-your-bag, don't-mind-if-it-gets-beat-up retro handheld. As others have said, budget for a name brand SD card and do a clean install, add your own ROM collection rather than relying on the poorly organized stock card. If the stock card is Kioxia it's likely reliable enough, you can re-flash it and use it for your boot drive.
It was really marketed for people who want to emulate GBA games with the nostalgic GBA SP form factor. The ability to run other systems is a nice bonus. They didn't want to include analog triggers to make it more "authentic".
I think the 35xx h is way better for people who don't care about nostalgia.

Building on that point, you can use this in a sort of "console mode" by pairing a Bluetooth controller or using a compatible wired one via the USB C port; then output the video to a TV / monitor using the built-in mini HDMI port
There are also those select PSP titles like Mega Man: Maverick Hunter X and Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles that play well on this CPU and don't need joysticks + work very well using a D-Pad.
