Heads up to anyone considering this. The x-lock system isn't compatible with traditional discs, and the discs required, at least last time I looked into them, were 5-10x as expensive. So switching to a quick change grinder will end up costing you a ton more in the long run if you use a grinder often. Better solution is actually to have multiple of the exact same grinder. When you need to switch to a different disc type or wire wheel, you simply pick up the other tool which conveniently gives the first time to cool down extending its life.

I agree with this - I own this grinder and I certainly wouldn't recommend an X-Lock grinder as a replacement for multiple grinders. I have several corded grinders of the same model with different types of discs on each.

I use the cordless Makita as a portable on-the-go grinder and it's a good grinder that's definitely nice to have around.

That said, I'm definitely not sold on the X-Lock system and I wouldn't buy another one unless the price was really good. Changing discs on a conventional threaded arbor doesn't take that much longer than switching X-Lock discs. Plus the X-Lock discs are definitely more expensive and harder to find.

If you get X-Lock buyer's remorse you can buy adapters [amazon.com] so that an X-Lock grinder can use normal discs, which I eventually did.

The free 5.0 Ah battery would have made this a killer deal, even with the X-Lock system (just get an adapter, as noted elsewhere). Alas, OOS.

A handful of adapters might make this worthwhile. X-lock is definitely safer since people usually don't unplug or remove their battery to change discs. How does the offset the extra length of the adapter arbor affect how it feels, balance, etc.?
