Got one of these in 2019 for $130. Still works and functions as expected. It can be slow when reading drives, though, for some reasons I don't entirely understand.

Takes one to know one!

But in all seriousness, I've been cheap with gear like this before and had mixed results. Some worked as expected. Some under-performed a bit, but still worked. And some were unreliable or worse.

Saying that there are 5-bay external USB to SATA docks for $22 doesn't make me think OP's deal is overpriced. It makes me think that whoever buys one for $22 from Ali Express is likely going to lose data, or at least test their backup plan. Adding in RAID support to that $22 price point makes me even more convinced to stay away.

Do you use them separately or as a one big drive? How do you deal with a failed disk?

Its not raid, they are all separate drives.

The raid units cost more, and aren't open like this one which is more of a temporary solution, not saving that much by buying a much more cheaply built unit than their full enclosures.

This kind of thing is more for filling drives before shipping them out or storage, just temporary.

The other units were on sale listed on here since christmas.

If your OS is Windows perhaps Storage Spaces [microsoft.com] would work for a RAID while using this enclosure?

There are 2 bay docking stations that are available for that much on AE. I know because I had been looking for something similar there as well as Amazon.

Any time you get past 3 drives it goes past the 50 dollar mark. And I'm not sure those larger units support cloning either (if you were to need that function).

I buy lots of stuff from Ali, but with something like this I'd bet money that whatever you buy from there will be lying about transfer speeds. Buy once, cry once.

I spent a while comparing many different storage solutions for Plex. I wanted a fast connection, quick spin up time, and I did not want to waste too much electricity. You're only going to find that by spending a lot more money on USB C / Thunderbolt devices. And still more on electricity.

If you have space in your desktop computer, consider installing the drives internally. SATA 3 has 6 Gbps transfer speeds and power usage will just be the power needed to run the drives. You're also relying on your motherboard instead of cheaper external controllers for the drives.

I did not have enough drive slots, but I did have plenty of open space. So I bought an internal caddy and mounted it with a few screws and zip ties. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09GB3KVNR

For Plex I have 4 18 TB drives set up in Windows Storage Spaces in two-way mirror mode.

Thanks for this information. That's pretty much what I am doing right now. My 2015 gaming PC has turned into my Plex server with internal drives but now I have a newer everyday PC running near it but it's an ITX setup that I cannot add any drives to.

I was hoping to get rid of the old PC, even though it has been runny great.
