I've been worried I may have received some counterfeits in all the Amazon knipex deals I've gotten in on. Any good reference to tell if so? Some staining has formed on some of the tools and I thought it was worth confirming this is normal.
From what I've read, knipex counterfeit pliers aren't as prevalent as people make it sound. There are lots of clones/ripoffs that copy the design but aren't branded "knipex". I've gotten a few from these deals and I'll hit them with a file to make sure they're hardened and the jaws line up nicely, so I'm not worried about them. All cheap pliers seem to have very sloppy jaw fitment and aren't very hard.
Thanks a lot for the reply and advice on testing hardness.
Would love to chase this down to a Knipex rep who might confirm a "second quality" supply chain theory. Or are you instead pointing out that they are Amazon returns that are being resold?

2nds are QC rejected for whatever reason, not used. A lot of times, they are purchased then resold online as brand new.
Different companies have different terms for different inventory.
Used: Customer used and returned, not refurbished, might be missing items.
Open-Box: Customer opened box, returned, certain companies like Secondpity will use Open-Box as a the same term for Used above where a customer returns an item, but the item is never serviced or cleaned. Many open-box items refer to as a display item at a retail store or a demo item.
Refurbished: Customer returned, Manufacturer or Refurbishing company fixes, replaces or re-tests items, QCs and resells.
2nds: Item is rejected from Quality Control for whatever reason (item is labeled size 34 when it is actually size 36, one item is missing from the set, one pant leg longer than the other, missing tag during manufacturing, etc) Stores like Marshalls and Ross get inventory of 2nds and 3rds to resell at a discount.
3rds: Same as above but worse quality.
Wow I am especially hesitant to purchase now that I know there is a second quality supply chain out there. I assumed Knipex would not introduce this at the risk of reputation risk since there is no indication of second quality on the items.
when im buying an expensive, well known brand... i generally try to buy something similar from that brand from somewhere other than amazon prior to buying it from amazon, so i have something to compare it to. and unless i can save a lot on amazon, ill almost always buy elsewhere.
the infuriating part is how much amazon refuses to listen to counterfeit claims. i sent them pictures, and they refused to believe it. they will take down every single product, or seller review that says "knockoff" or "counterfeit" with zero exceptions. so keep in mind, those things ive sent back... have all been resold to someone. ive actually gotten in the habit of trying to inform the next purchaser. ie, i bought a pair of sitka hunting gloves. completely fake. i put a note in a fingertip of the glove so when the next person buys it, they will find out real quick.
Do you have the item number for lowes? Or done in store?

Anyway, I just downloaded the Lowe's app to my phone and used chat to get them to price match Amazon and place my order.
(I tried to order by phone but Lowe's told me to call back after 8:30 EST!)
