Wooden utensils like these need to be maintained. The wood will dry out from being washed and dried. Coating with food grade oil helps to keep the wood soft and resilient.
Since these are carved, there is a chance you got bad grains but usually maintenance will keep these working.
The spatula shape is the one that can get worn down eventually, though.

Did you soak it in some food grade oils prior to using it?

I bought 6 sets at that time for gifts and only 1 set out of the 6 sets had very bland 'crappy-grain, no color variation' olivewood. Another set was 'so-so', while the other 4 sets had great looking color variations and tight, yet heavy, grain. It all makes a difference.
They do need to be kept oiled with food-grade oil, just as Nothingworked said.
I haven't given them as gifts yet, and Walmart won't price match even on these recently bought sets, so looks like I'll return all 6 sets and repurchase to recoup another $30 savings.
Mine are marked return eligible until May 15.

Edit: Nevermind, I bought this set.
Why not just dip in olive oil and leave it for 24 hours and then wash off with light dish detergent
Personally I don't like to use olive oil because it can go rancid over time when exposed to air. If you use the spatulas often then that probably won't be a problem.
I don't use wooden spoons or butcher blocks every day so I prefer mineral oil because it's neutral and doesn't go rancid. I like to rub a light coat of oil into the wood. The friction creates a little warmth, pushes the oil into the wood and buffs it smooth the same way as buffing oil or polish on wood furniture. I guess you could soak it in oil but I think that would waste oil and could get a little messy.
