Coming to you guys to get your opinion on Capital One Shopping.
Back last August 2024, I installed all the Capital One Shopping software in my browser, signed up for all the emails, removed all my other shopping apps (that worked!) in my browser, disabled all my ad blockers (so now I deal with ALL the ads), and essentially gave up all my privacy to have my browsing history tracked by Capital One - I went all in. Through it all, and easily over a thousand dollars in referred purchases, I have $6.32 in rewards to show for it.
I genuinely try to make qualifying purchases incentivized by the offer, and I read all the fine-print qualifications, but nearly nothing ever processes. I've called and chatted and emailed with CapOne reps and they always find some kind of "gotcha" that kicks me out. Whether it was choosing "same day pickup" over "same day delivery," or having "paper products" mixed in with my order, or choosing the black one instead of the gray one, or not clicking through the little tracking email within 24 hours, or not selecting the appropriate "rewards level" through the little pull-down menu, or having too many browser windows open...on and on. I've made 13 purchases through CapOne since August, and only one has worked - 1 out of 13 in 9 months! What's your success rate?
Through it all, it's just not worth it. Just today, I've spent over an hour making an online purchase, following the CapOne guidelines, and all for what, the hope that the $9 incentive will process on a $150 purchase. It's more worry and hassle than it's worth.
Bottom line, what sucks is that we don't know if the rewards are working at the time of purchase. We are required to be mindful of our qualifying purchases for days, weeks, and monthly billing cycles after the purchase date!
CapOne gets all your data, markets products targeted to you, likely gets a referral bonus if clicked through to the retail website, and likely gets a percent of your sale, whether or not any rewards are passed on to the consumer. As a consumer, we have no recourse and are held victim to customer service agents who are programmed to do anything but give the incentive due.
No consumer should be subject to this behavior! We all know can assume why Capital One operates the program this way. It should be illegal. Any incentive that isn't tied to the retailer or tied to your credit card at time of purchase is suspect, and should be investigated by the FTC and other consumer protection agencies!
