Why is a locally stocked (somewhat) brand name item, probably with some QC process, and several levels of wholesale markup cheaper vs a ship direct from China alternative with no name that most likely ships direct from the assembly line without even being power cycled / function checked before getting a label slapped on it?

I can take a few wild guesses....

Plus, I think most of the el cheapos are "wireless" (not bluetooth) and require a dongle which can be a big deal breaker with mobile devices and portable PC gaming systems that probably don't have a USB A port to spare (or at all).

They have different kinds. This one has many bad reviews. Same landfill trash that comes directly from china. I prefer non-bt because even my logi kb suffer from sticky key syndrome. Between bt and dongle i always switch to the latter.

Does anyone know if you can use this as a wired keyboard by using a USB-C cable? I'm looking for a small keyboard to throw in my bag that I might need to use on a computer for 15 seconds. Rather not have to take the time to connect to bluetooth if I can just plug it in real quick. Any suggestions?

That really has no impact on the difference in depth of middlemen seeking profits. A bad product is still marked up at every step to the end user because the markup is the only reason those participants are in the supply chain.

These little devices can be really handy. I've been using the Rii Mini K25 for 4 years now to control my HTPC from the couch. You can wave it around like an "Air Mouse" which I prefer to a tiny trackpad. It also has 5 programmable IR buttons you can use to turn on your TV, Soundbar, Receiver or adjust their volume. I have one button to wake up my HTPC, but I had to buy a separate USB IR receiver for it (FLIRC). Some downsides are that it operates with a dongle over 2.4GHz (no bluetooth) and the buttons can be finicky, i.e. requires 2 presses instead of one, or accidentally registers 2 presses instead of one. For basic media playback or browsing, I'm happy with it and it allows me to keep my actual BT keyboard and mouse hidden away in a drawer until they are needed for more serious work.

If you're wanting one for htpc or general couch PC use, make sure it has a scroll wheel. So far the only one I found was a rii unit.

I love these to use with compact Raspberry Pi builds.

I opted for the Rii i4. It has a scroll wheel, 2.4GHz dongle and BT, removable battery, and USB-C. The price can fluctuate a bit. I got mine for $34.
