Where this ended up working in my favor:
- The PS5 digital was only $318.99 anyway, more or less cover what that code would fetch without having to bother doing it.
- My "excellent condition" open box was actually in perfect, unused condition, because whoever bought it and returned only cared about the code to begin with. Ties on the USB C cable, HDMI cable, condition of the controller and the console were all perfect. Nobody touched the thing or hooked it up to a TV.
- It took them six weeks, but I just got a physical $20 Best Buy gift card in the mail for their inability to do anything about the missing Fortnite code. So that's a brand new PS5 digital for slightly less than $300.
I can't say you would have this sort of result. The $59 off more or less accounts for the missing code, though the benefit here is that your have the built in disc drive. Sony seems to almost never drop prices on accessories (other than VR being a flop), and there's reason to believe some items might be getting more expensive (it's worth pointing out that increase in MSRP on PS5 Slim Digital and every category of PS+ occurred well before "orange man bad" was back in office). So I'll very likely be ordering a disc drive from Aamzon, because Best Buy charges 2.5x the price on a two year warranty ($25 vs. $10), which after tax, pretty much negates the gift card. But with some point thrown in I will have acquired a "brand new" PS5 with a detachable disc drive for ~$375 USD, and that drive can be used on a PS5 Pro down the line, since PS6 was probably in nightmare pricing territory even before, and likely after, current events.Best Buy gets themselves in trouble for showing a retail SKU box for what is likely to be delivered in a plain white PlayStation box, at which point Sony will not provide you any new replacement code. But I'm super pleased with how my scenario played out, particularly since it coincided with PS+ Premium Extra Ultra Whatever TF being $99.99 for one year. Just good timing on everything.
Definitely a Sony's way of deterring buying used.

A lot of work for a small gain and savings. No thanks.

Refurb phat is $309.
hardware is pretty much the same. Some later revisions of the motherboard (EDM-044) switched from a Panasonic HDMI encoder to a Realtek HDMI redriver, which has the bandwidth to handle 4k/120hz at 4:4:4 colorspace. (the Series X was 4:4:4 all along iirc)
