I bought the $329 version recently, very happy with the results from a snorkeling trip. The stabilization is so much better than our GoPro 7 Black, which produces unwatchable snorkeling videos. Also the battery life is great - we got probably 2 hrs of recording out of one battery. Used one battery on an all day snorkeling trip. Don't think you really need 3.

Bought this a couple months ago for dirtbiking and enjoying it so far. I feel like the fov isn't as wide as my gopro 11, but the battery life is crazy! I go through two batteries in the same time I would go through 5 Enduro batteries on the Gopro

Are you set to wide angel on the dji? My experience at least with the action 4 and 10 has been just the opposite that the 4 is quite a bit wider

It also depends on the stabilization. if using rocksteady+ or horizon balancing, it would crop the video more. im only using rocksteady with uw and havent noticed the fov angle.

I have switched from using gopro hero 12 to this last time this deal was available. I am very happy with the switch.
Main features that Osmo Action 5 Pro is better than Hero 12 -
  • Battery - i think the gopro enduro battery was lasting be like 45 - 50 mins on 5.2k 30fps setting. Osmo action at 4k 30fps lasts me like 1hr and 15 min. significant improvement
  • Low light - I record a lot of my mountain biking rides, with GoPro if you dont have the good lighting, the stabilization becomes bad and the footage becomes unusable. Osmo action 5 pro just does it so much better
  • Recording vertically - the cage makes it easier to switch to vertically if i wanted to record it for youtube shorts / instagram
  • Much better app - I never use gopro app because it was always slow. Although it's kinda sketchy that dji app isnt on the play store for android, the app experience is so much better. i can actually connect to the camera and get a useable footage, edit it, and upload it quickly
  • Audio - The built-in mic isnt that much better than gopro, but if you're struggling to get good audio, consider getting the dji mic mini to pair. I used to put the wind muffler using the double sided tape on gopro, but that makes it unusable in the water. ive been using the mic mini on all my mtb rides and the audio is fantastic with no wind noise
GoPro hero definitely has some advantages on some features though. Better recording resolution, and when the light is good, the color on gopro and how smooth and natural stabilization is, you just can't beat that.
But still, with those things I listed above, I am so happy that I switched to action 5 pro.

While snorkeling, how well did it adapt to the low light?
And did the underwater colors come through?

the low light performance and image stabilization are quite noticeably better with the action 5 pro.

Well, it's better than the Hero 7 Black, but we also used an Olympus TG7 and I think the colors look better on that. The TG7 has a dedicated underwater White Balance mode, the Action Pro 5 doesn't seem to, but adjusts it automatically. The TG7 videos also look better, but unfortunately the stabilization is more like the Hero 7, very shaky - the videos my son took are all unusable (he doesn't understand how to shoot video though). The stabilization is amazing on the Action Pro.

I'll PM a google photos link to some screen captures from the Action Pro 5. Sorry I've only created a couple so far. But it gives you a good idea of the colors.

Main reason I switched was less issues with overheating and ability to run off of usb power and still have the battery for backup if usb power goes away.
