Is there a preference/difference?

The key to maintainance is the oil change interval. If you are changing it around 5K, every synthetic oil that conforms to manufacturere specs works fine. Now if you want to stretch it to teh advertized claims (10K, 15K, 20K) then its on you. Your car, your engine, your money. The only way to validate it is by going through an oil analysis but again, every engine is different.
I recently changed a valve cover gasket on a 2011 198K Sienna which has had its oil changes done around 5500K (5W30) with Pennzoil, Kirkland, Mobil1 & Castorl whichever was cheaper. Mostly with Pennzoil due to the rebates. There was zero varnish and no, none of teh cars in our family/extended family have been loosing oil (combo of DI & rehular V6 engines)

Pennzoil ultra is their top of the line full synthetic. It's a great oil.
