Yes. It's a waste of money buying the attached monitor. Especially since Apple's idea of recycling is shipping them back to China and washing their hands.
Apple keyboards and peripherals are also kind of pricey. I got one of these for my elderly mom who has notoriously struggled with operating her computer and it's been a game changer.

There actually aren't many 5k monitor options out there, and definitely not under 1k new.
Realistically 90% of the people that would buy this would be just fine with a 4k monitor and M4 mini for hundreds less. But I think the real appeal to those people is the slim & simple apple aesthetic, and maybe the included Magic mouse/keyboard.
However, it wouldn't be in a sleek package that has 1 cord coming off of it. Aesthetic counts for something and a lot of offices want this look at their front desk, or homeowners who want the same look for what is a web machine.
Q: Is this just glorified ewaste since none of the components can be upgraded or replaced?
A: Correct.
Q: Wait, you mean that once one part of this machine gives up the ghost post-warranty period, the entire thing is a heap of trash?
A: Like I said, correct. The only things you can reuse are the keyboard and mouse.
Q: Well, can you at least reuse the monitor?
A: Nope!
Q: But I read somewhere you can do that!
A: Incorrect. But you can read a lot of things on the internet that aren't true. Here's the real deal....reusing was only on a handful of specific versions of the older Intel iMac, running very specific software, specific macOS versions. You could only use it as a second display on another "compatible" Mac running specific softare + macOS. And it was very glitchy. Not at all "plug and play".
Q: Well, why wouldn't they let you reuse the screen since it's still good and such high quality?
A: Because the same reasons no laptop manufacturer lets you reuse the screen on a laptop as a second display -- it'd cut into sales. They want you to keep buying a new model. Reduce + Reuse + Recycle doesn't earn them double-digit quarter-over-quarter growth.
Q: Isn't the 10-core Mac Mini at $600 (or less) a much better bargain? Especially the recent sale with it being at $450? Meaning you have ~$650 to buy a monitor + speakers + mic + webcam + keyboard + mouse of your choice? Instead of a intentionally-designed mouse that needs to be put onto its back like a turtle just so it can charge?
A: That design is considered "courageous", even today. That word, among many others, are used to separate you from your hard-earned money. But yes, the above supposition is correct. And you can reuse those components too, so you have an incentive to buy quality accessories. And if one piece fails, you can swap it out with little to no complications.
Q: But speaking of design, be nice. It's so thin!
A: That's not a question. Also, it's sitting on a desk -- not in your pants pocket like a phone. Size doesn't matter.
Q: So who'd actually buy this machine?
A: -shrug- Aging grandparents who may never need to worry about upgrading their computer?
