I really needed the larger screen for cad work on the go. I didn't want the nano screen because of viewing angles being lost. The larger battery means I can work much longer before charging. And it charges faster. 14 m1 pro I was lucky to get over 2 hrs. With this machine I'm pushing over 6. But that is mostly due to the increase of ram.
The 14 core m4 pro is extremely fast. Odds are I'll hit ram limitations way before that processor slows me down. Looks like I'll be getting almost 800 for my m1. Not bad for a laptop that is over 3 years old. I'm getting almost half of my money back.
Not to keep bragging about this machine. 48GB on a Mac feels about equal to 64 on windows. My windows machine has 32. Same task running side by side with both processors barely touched. My m4 was using 28 and the windows all 32 and getting blogged down. So I found myself being able to switch between 4 different programs at the same time. That was such a relief. My ram usage peeked at 42 which meant I had a good amount left in reserve.

The extra VRAM is good but will run much slower. Still, I guess if you can fit a slightly larger model into memory you have more options, but at a good bit slower speed. Outside of this one thing (local llm), I'd definitely go for the M4 Pro.
