Can someone smarter than me please weigh in here?

Price seems good. WD instead of Seagate which I gather is good in terms of failure rates.

I need a larger drive for my daughter who's in film school to archive completed projects and raw material from her existing sdd.

Is this good for that?

Yes, this would be fine. IMO the price is just WD gouging masquerading as a sale, but that's not going to change today.

What you both need to understand is that she/anyone needs AT LEAST two copies of anything she wants to save (original and a back up). IOW, a single drive serving as a back up is the bare minimum, but better than nothing.

You wrote SDD, but I'm assuming you mean SSD, and while there's no spinning platters in SSDs, they do fail. I had a 4TB Samsung 990 Pro fail, but even if that didn't happen, I usually do backups to three external drives simultaneously. That's two large 18 or 20TB drives, plus a smaller 5TB portable black drive so if I had to leave in a hurry I could at least take that with me.

This deal is sold out, but to answer your question for the next time you see a sale: Yes, this drive would be good for your daughter's needs, as storage.

In my opinion, it would not be good for using to edit footage directly on. Use it for storage only.

Also, it is good to have backups. Don't rely on just one drive for storage of important files.
