edit: being heavily downvoted but what I mean is that when tech ages, the price goes down. Even Apple products that hold their value exceptionally well go down 6 years after they release.
Other companies just want short term payout and don't provide long term support so some people will pay for the reliability and support.
Genuinely curious as to what is an out of the box comparable streaming device that pretty much handles anything you throw at it.
edit: seems like you don't get true atmos support.

Lossless audio from remux

The reality is that there isn't really anything comparable on the market. All models have aged very well, and Nvidia still pushes out regular software updates. Also, it was just incredibly, incredibly future-proof when first released. Though there are maybe some reasonable options by now, Shield TV is still the best.
Would be nice to eventually get a newer model with HDMI 2.1 support for 4K/120 and 8K/60, etc. tho!

Nothing. Shield supports lossless codecs, great backlit remote, more powerful cpu than other streamers, plex server support, external storage support (2 usb3.0), ethernet port, 4k HDR10 DV, and even gaming. I primarily use it to playback my remux ripped library for lossless audio.
Bottom line: Buy it if you want the best fastest lossless streamer.
Alternative: Otherwise get an ONN device for $20 for a great value Google TV device. ONN also has a Pro model for $50 with more horsepower/snapper, ethernet, etc.
"Most people don't get why the NVIDIA Shield Pro costs more—but it's not just a "streaming stick." It's a full media powerhouse. Unlike Fire Stick or Roku, the Shield can stream in 4K with no lag, play files from your computer or home server, run Plex, Kodi, emulators, and even upscale old videos to look sharper with AI. It supports Dolby Vision, Atmos, HDR10+, and lossless audio, which most cheaper devices don't.
Plus, it never slows down like other streamers—it's built like a tank and still gets updates years later. You can even customize buttons, use voice commands, and sideload any app. It's basically a tech nerd's dream tool and still crushes every other box even 5+ years later.
At $145? It's a no-brainer if you want full control over what you watch and how you watch it. It's the last streaming box you'll ever need."

Even my original 2017 shield is still holding up well. It handles DTS-HD MA, Dolby Atmos, True HD, HDR, 3D. Anything I can throw at it. Only thing it can't do is dolby vision since they can't update the hardware. There still isn't any other stable hardware competitor who can do all this. Also continue support from the biggest company in the world.
If you just have TV and no audio equipment, roku is fine.
