This or the 13" MacBook Air M4 16/256?
This one has 1TB storage, a better display and is a MBP - a fan-cooled chassis, but how significant is the M4 advantage over M1 Pro?

I have a 14" MBP for work with the M2 Pro. And my personal computer is a 13" Air M4. Battery life is much better on the Air and it's very quick. I don't do anything that would need a MBP at home so I prefer the Air for sure, not to mention it's new with a warranty and fresh battery.

the m4 is quicker in single threading (cpu). but the m1 pro has a quicker gpu, by about 20%..the battery is also larger (70watt hours).
although idk the condition of the batteries in these

My M2 Max is slower than M4 Air. And we are talking about M1 here. I would strongly recommend everyone to only buy M4 Air over this. I am sure with the new battery and far superior efficiency of M4, even the battery life would be better. And M4 Air would be lot slicker and would get longer support. Really no meaning to buy these at this price point. $500 would be a more appropriate price for a refurb quite old laptop at this point.

As a laptop, a practical element is the 1TB hard drive. Apple values the difference between 256GB and 1TB as like, $3-400. Im on this same laptop from 2 years ago at ~$1100...and with 4k video that I edit, the number of times where having a 256GB hard drive would *require* me to have attached drives that cant possibly be as fast or as reliable, and even a 512GB drive would be sketchy...so, it depends on your use case.

There's definitely lower requirement use cases where going M4 Air makes sense, but again, those are also unlikely to need the 1TB storage.

Comparing this against the M4 Air...

With the M4 Air, you're getting something -brand new- (with a real warranty versus this "all states" warranty -- who knows how they handle things). It's four years newer, and it's a little more power efficient. The M4 Air comes in 13" and 15" sizes, so either smaller or bigger -- depending on your budget and personal preferences. The CPU is faster on the Air.

With the M1 Pro, you're getting an active cooled machine which can sustain workloads a LOT longer than the M4 Air (the M4 Air gets heat soaked really fast, especially on GPU and multi-core activities). The GPU is better on the M1 Pro, and the M1 Pro has far better speakers and microphone. But more noticeably, a significantly better screen. Oh, yeah, you're getting 1tb of storage instead of the 256gb on the M4 Air base model...which is criminally expensive to upgrade.

The warts? The M1 Pro is used. So you're rolling the dice with it.

What about m3 air? I'm looking to save 150 just to have a personal Mac, but if performance is that much different I'll put down 150 more. Mostly will be used for productivity and no GPU use

Do you have adblockers and anti-virus malware protection software for your particular Macs ?

Windows user here looking to switch and wondering how you prevent ads and malware and unauthorized hacks ?

and also if adblockers and anti-virus will slow down Macs ?

I felt M4 is a significant improvement from power and core efficiency. Given M4 Air can be had now at $849 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0DZD91W4F), my recommendation would still be M4 Air.

I got the M3 recently from the Brandsmart deal and I love it. Looked at it next to the M4 and couldn't tell any difference. $849 is good deal for the M4 but I think $699 for the M3 is a great deal.

I am not sure about eBay warranty but had bought a Mac book pro 1.5 years ago from backmarket with 2 year extended warranty and recently damaged the screen accidentally ...went to one of the authorized local service centers and not only they replaced the screen for free but also the battery as it was not charging well...would recommend shopping from them

Quite old yet it was current gen less than 2.5 years ago? I have a MBP M1 Pro. For most it's still faster than needed. I think it comes down to how someone values the screen and the speakers, which are both much better than on the Air, relative to the cpu speed.
