Difference between Milwaukee M12 and M12 FUEL tools lies in the power source and technology they utilize. M12 FUEL tools feature a POWERSTATE brushless motor, REDLINK PLUS electronic intelligence, and REDLITHIUM battery technology, resulting in increased power, run time, and motor lifespan compared to standard M12 tools.

Edit: OP's deal has $9.99 shipping cost (which wasn't included in the description above), so the Home Depot deal is the same price but for the Fuel version.
I remember and bought just a few years ago the old "round nosed" brushed impact and drill with one battery when it hit 79 bucks with vet discount blah blah and it works fine for my trailer.
IF you pay attention, you know what set I'm talking about. It is still around for 99 bucks and a battery and bag all the time..
THIS, is a good deal...

Hell, I reach for these before any M18s. Unless you *really* need the boost in power the M18 gives, I always go for the M12s because they're lighter and fit into tighter spaces, and these subcompact ones double down on that. Especially for home use where you don't always have options for maneuvering yourself or a tool in some pretty tight spaces.
At one of the buildings I manage, the mechanical room looks like that old screen saver with the pipes. And the literal closet where the fire sprinkler system is located is just wall to wall cluster of pipes. The fire chief can barely fit his arm through to check valves, let alone a wrench if it needs adjusting.
I also have the M12 Fuel and Surge, I prefer the Surge. Both are in our motorhome, so I haven't had a chance to compare side by side yet. My initial thoughts are to keep the Surge and subcompact and sell the Fuel. Don't get me wrong, the Fuel is great, but the M12 Surge is awesome, the M18 Surge sucks. Ever since getting the M12 Surge, I haven't touched the Fuel. The Fuel is sometimes too powerful and not as easy to control speed like the Surge, way less bit slip with the Surge.
Now, I am hoping the Subcompact is small enough for tight areas in the motorhome, compared to the Surge. I also like the size of the Subcompact drill that may replace the Fuel hammer drill I carry, the hammer portion being a joke.
Overall, the Subcompact line is a very niche product. If I was just buying for doing stuff around the house, it would only be the M12 Surge, skip the drill all together get some 1/4 shank drill bits.
Edit: The more I use the M12 line, which is new to me due to getting them for the motorhome, the less I want to my use my M18 Fuel tools I have at home.

What don't you like about the m18 surge?
