Southwest Airlines and Expedia have round trip airfares travelling to and from Washington DC (DCA) and Los Angeles (LAX) for $174, making 1 stop. These are basic economy fares that only allow a personal item and a carry-on bag....much like the other major US airlines' basic economy fare rules.

The next best airfare is nonstop for $225 on other major airlines.

Why so much hate for LA? I chose to move here 15 years ago and it has been a great experience to raise my family here. The variety of people, culture, food, climate, geography, etc has been incredible. I grew up in the rural Midwest where everyone looked, cooked, and worshipped the same way my family did. Flat fields for hundreds of miles. I needed to escape, and never looked back. LA is just as clean and safe as any major metropolitan area if you are visiting. Taxes and government policy suck sometimes, but this is universally true.

The angry shouting people on TV tell them who to hate.

Just ignore them like the rest of us do.
