Bought this about a month ago or so. So far so good. Solid quality for $50. It has double wall with insulation, adjustable air vents 2 on each side (top & bottom), and the grates clip in so they don't just fall out and they have decent retention.

The only thing it's missing is a built in thermometer. I saw someone online mention they drilled a hole through it and added their own. I might give that a try

WTF is this thing? It makes zero sense how they open it up showing 2 grills when you need to cover up to retain heat etc

It would completely depend on what you were cooking, for most people using something like this it's a grill and you do that over an open flame.

What I really question is how useful this would be as a smoker.

If you cook hot and fast you don't need to, which is most things like hot dogs, burgers, flank steaks, skewers, etc..

Yeah hotdogs and burgers and brats that's about it but forget chicken and thick steaks and country ribs especially if like it more on well done side

From the video, for those thicker items, you just use one side of the grill and close it. You have the option of cooking more food, or less.

I think I'm more concerned that it sits flat. Does the bottom get really hot? I would want some fold out legs or a stand to get it off of sitting flat. But maybe I'm not completely understanding how this thing sits.

I bought this about a month ago when it was last posted because I wanted to try the Nomad Grill but didn't want to spend $700. This is the first charcoal grill I've ever owned and I've already cooked all kinds of things with this that all received great reviews. I smoked some St. Louis-style pork ribs on this for hours and they came out amazing. I've never loaded both sides with charcoal the way they advertise, though. I always use it as a traditional charcoal grill/smoker. A couple of times when it started raining I just shut the grill like a briefcase, picked it up and carried it away. I love this thing, it was $50 well spent, it's pretty much already paid for itself with the amount that I save eating out/ordering BBQ. Eventually I'm gonna try taking it out camping or to the beach but for home-use it's been great

It has little legs/pegs that keep the bottom elevated. The outer walls get very warm but not dangerously hot to the point where the outside of the grill can't be touched thanks to the insulated design. I use mine on top of a plastic folding table and either a large tile or stone or something just to protect the plastic from the radiant heat.

Do you have any more info on this mod? So far all I've done is cut one of my grill grates at about the 3/4 mark leaving 1/4 of it removable to give me easy access to the charcoal when smoking (like a poor-man's hinged grate).

Had to look for it again but I ended up finding it. It was a comment on a YouTube video on this grill.

This is what their comment said:

"Great video and review.I purchased this grill and put a thermometer on it. I just drilled a 3/8 inch hole in the upper hood and the firebox. When I removed the firebox to put the nut on the thermometer, I discovered there is insulation attached between the hood and firebox. That probably explains the 300 degree temperature difference you got when you measured the temperature of the coals and the surface temperature at the hood. Love your content. Keep it coming!"

"l just used an inexpensive Hamilton Beach 2 1/2 inch thermometer. I purchased it at a local Supermarket, but I found them on eBay for $12 bucks."
