Are there any Lowes coupons to get more off? I want one of these, but $600 is still a lot considering my Toro runs fine.

When it comes to a push mower, my 20 year old Murray works fine. I do like the idea that I could store the electric mower in ways you would not store a gas mower. Make some more room in the shed.

I would wait until clearance time for for Kobalt 80V mowers. They are listed for less than the Ego, and also since Kobalt is Lowes own brand, the previous year model often go on clearance for like 50% off. Likely easier to obtain warranty claims for Kobalt products too since it is owned by Lowes.

Electric mowers require no gas and no maintenance, which is huge for machines that sit for long periods of time in between mowing seasons. Also no smells and less noise. I can't wait until decent Electric riding mowers are available so I can get one of those too.

No I get it, I would like a quieter electric rider too although like electric cars, being able to refuel in 2 minutes with a gas can is nice. I use my rider for hauling stuff around the yard sometimes too so it can get decent use in a given spring weekend day.

The cost premium for the electric walk behind mowers is what gets me right now, and like you said, the few rider options aren't ready for prime time.

The replacement battery cost is the maintenance and it's a big one. It's $200 for the 5 Ah with a 3 year warranty. If it was 5 years I would consider it but it would suck if it died just after 3 years.

Changing the oil on a push mower takes 5-10 min and it's dirt cheap. Filter is 1 min and its also cheap. Still have to sharpen the blades for both.

Older model:
Has some locking issues with the green clips for the handle extension
The battery position it is straight up and down vs angled towards the person mowing to show power remaining
Start button is a removable clip and not integrated as well.
Self propel throttle is not in the best location for use.


The newer model is basically a refinement of the previous version.

I went with the newest model if it means anything to you.

Also, if you are considering the older model, ACME Tools has them refurbished for even less.

That is true. Probably the most cost efficient way to deal with this is to transition your entire yard tool lineup to the same electric platform. For instance Ego, Kobalt etc all have multiple tools in that 56V or 80V lineup. Many are tool only, but the most popular tools such as mower and string trimmer and blower usually come in a version bundled with battery, where the cost difference is usually less than $100 rather than paying $200 for a single battery. This way you end up with 4 or 5 batteries that firstly allow you to space out their use so they don't degrade as much, and secondly allow you to keep working. Some applications use up battery really quickly, such as the blowers, so it is nice to have 3 or 4 charged batteries that you can just keep swapping, allowing you to finish the work and not have to sit and wait for it to charge.

My personal experience with Kobalt 80V system has been very positive. 5 years in and only my oldest battery is showing signs of degradation, and even then it is more than usable still. Also 80V is the most powerful line of tools in the market, and often goes on sale/clearance since it is Lowes' own brand. I just slowly built into the platform, picking up the major tools at first, then adding more tool-battery combos or tool only, when they come up on sale. Picked up the self-propelled mower when it was on clearance at 50% off, with 2 new batteries for like $300, which was a sweet deal. Will never go back to gas powered yard tools again now that I have string trimmer, hedge trimmer, blower, and mower all on the same platform using the same set of batteries, and zero maintenance. The string trimmer also accepts attachments so I can still use my old edge trimming attachment, for instance.

Electric is the way to go. Although I do wonder about entire lines using 40V or even 20V systems. I got to think those are nowhere near as powerful enough compared to gas powered tools. The 80V I would say is on par with gas tools power wise. Costs a bit extra, but I think it is worth it.

Cost aside, the walk behind mowers are more than good enough to be mainstream right now, and "refueling" isn't as much an issue since the mowers usually belong to a certain battery platform such as Ego 56V or Kobalt 40V or 80V or whatever. So you would ideally invest into that platform and have multiple yard tools all using the same batteries, which also gets you 3 or 4 batteries which come bundled with the tools. This way even if you have a huge yard, you have extra charged batteries that you can just pop into the mower and keep working. It was easier for me since by the time I needed the full set of tools for my new house, multiple full platforms were already available, so I didn't feel like I was throwing away still working gas powered tools. I was able to go in all electric from the start.

But the riding mower is a different problem, since you need much more battery power. Looks like the $5000OMG EGO zero turn mower allows you to put up to SIX of their biggest 10 Ah 56V batteries in to give you long run time. I guess if you are REALLY invested in their system you could conceivably have say 10 batteries, which lets you pop in extra ones to keep working. Damn that's pricy though. But when the prices come down I'll be in line for one! Figure I can get another 3-5 years out of my current rider, and by then there'll be some decent choices on the market. If Kobalt makes one for their 80V system maybe I can buy one that comes with 4 fresh new batteries and then use my current 5 batteries as emergency spares.
