Peanut butter naturally has peanut oil, but that oil separates making it harder to use. As a result the peanut oil is taken off and sold for frying and that oil is replaced by another which won't separate as much.
This used to be partially hydrogenated oils, which are now known to be bad for you as the process generates trans-fats and the FDA had manufacturers stop using it. As a replacement, palm oil is suitable. This is what is used in 'natural' butters from JIF, Skippy, etc. There is an alternative though, simply to fully hydrogenate the oil. When fully hydrogenated there should be no trans-fats either, so the actual unhealthy aspect of hydrogenation should be ameliorated. This is now what is used in regular Jif, Skippy, etc.
I don't have any information that disagrees with that claim, but I choose to use the palm oil variety for my children.

i just noticed Aldi has 18oz jars $1.89 now
for some odd reason fruit preserves are
still inflation overpriced, but peanut butter
is back down to normal.
