Everyone keeps saying they're waiting for Black Friday or Prime Day or whatever, but it's been awhile since I've seen a Black Friday where prices were better than what you get throughout the year if you really just took advantage of the deals that pop up here on slickdeals. Black Friday is mostly for people who don't browse deal web sites regularly in my opinion. The sales tend to be on par with or slightly worse than what I've seen for things throughout the year just looking at front page deals.
It's a good price for sure. But this drive was 129.99 back in July during the Amazon prime day deals. The next prime member exclusive event is coming yet this month. I wish knew exactly what was going to be on sale cause I need another one of these drives and I'm not gonna pay a lot for this muffler! 😁
It's $128 with Perks At Work via Samsung's official website for the 2TB. Just bought 2x there.

Worth noting that they just announced a 4tb version of this drive. Seeing as I want this to be my "forever drive" in my 4.0 m.2 slot, I think I'll hold out for that one

Peak speeds, sustained speeds, and IOPs. The WD850x is a close second in overall performance and actually better in certain tasks. You can't go wrong with either one. I just bought a pair of the 1TB WD850x's the other week when they were $54ea. If you run them in raid 0 they'll beat anything currently on the market.
Of course you don't store any actual data in RAID 0, right? Right???
And if you do, you back up every day, right?

Been there, done that. Backups saved me, but never again....

Raid 0 is a joke for anything beyond ephemeral junk, because it can quickly turn everything to junk...

So for a lab/hypervisor, this over the WD850x?

This 990 pro is the current king of M.2 drives for overall performance on PCIe 4. But there are several close seconds, the WD850x is one of them. You can't go wrong with either of these two, unless you over pay 💲.

There is nothing "forever" about this drive in any capacity. PCIe 4 is already obsolete. 4TB is great for bulk storage, but it would be a waste for an OS drive unless your system only has 1 M.2 slot.

There is a place for RAID 0. For example I run RAID 0 on gaming laptops. All your saved games are on the cloud and all the games are stored on the cloud. Even then you can also use OneDrive or Dropbox or Google Drive to backup all your critical dox if it fails.

Regardless if you just have one drive or JBOD or RAID0+1 etc..... you should always have backup somewhere.

Removing my message about 129.99. I somehow clicked around and landed on the 980pro instead of 990pro. Used 10% for Amex points promo for another $10 off.

I have this installed and it's blazing fast. Tested the drive and it achieves the speeds it says it does. 4TB model around the corner but I expect that to cost around $350-$400 when it drops later this year.

Why this 2TB Samsung drive instead of the $88 Crucial P5 + (w/o heatsink)? Is there a specific use case wherein the Samsung significantly outperforms the WD and Crucial models?

Yes, "IOPs" a.k.a (input output operations per second). The more the better and the 2TB version is rated higher than the 1TB variant. Will it make any difference in a real world use case? No! But does it look better on paper? Ya sure ya betcha! Again only on paper, it would make for a potentially better operating system drive since there are constant micro writes happening all the time. So if you want to sleep well at night knowing you bought the best of the best in overall performance, then buy this drive. Or if nightmares are more your thing, just think about how you could have paid less from other brands for the same real world performance. 😁

Very true, for anyone reading this, the best deals IMO happen right before black friday. All the good inventory for pc parts are usually gone by BF, so if you see something you like you should snag it even if ur hoping it goes down by another 10. Ive learned holding out for that extra 10 is not worth missing out on a nice upgrade or a QOL improvement.

I tried to post the new deal but SD would not let me. This drive is now $125.00 plus shipping from seller "Elite100" on Amazon. It's just pinching pennies at this point but you can save about $5.00 on the current selling price which all but matches the Prime Day Deal sale back in July.
Cheers 🍻

Delivery date is 9/14 – 9/19. If you need to return/excahnge, it can be a hassle.
