Can anybody recommend these? I've heard Asus is having some quality control issues but the prices and specs on these are very tempting.
Had a Vivobook flip from 2020 that got a crack in the keyboard deck near the hinge even though I never dropped it and rarely used the flip tent mode. A model like the one posted here or a zenbook should not have this issue as they are all metal and don't have tent mode. But yeah, from the reviews and the youtube videos, if something does come up you will have to fight with their warranty department to get the fix done and also be vigilant say no to unnecessary part replacements that they apparently try to tack on to charge you.
Thanks, but that's Asus provided info. I'm looking for real world, not fantasy land. Battery claims from any company are usually greatly exaggerated.

Do you want an experience like this:

Hopefully one doesn't need warranty service (I've not heard about the quality control issues of which you speak). My experience with the Asus laptops I've touched has been good.

Here is the ASUS page for this model:
https://www.asus.com/us/laptops/f...led-s5506/

This model appears to be a Walmart-only model.

If it weren't for the blue keyboard (not a fan of light-colored keycaps) I might check one out because the specs are great for the price.

If you check the website I linked to above you would see:

UP TO 16 HOURS, based on:

Battery tests conducted by ASUS on January 24, 2024 using the 1080p Video Playback scenario. Test configuration: Vivobook S 14 OLED (S5406MA), OLED panel, Intel Core ultra 9 185H, 1 TB SSD, 16 GB RAM, 75 Wh battery. Test settings: WiFi disabled, Windows Power Plan set to Balanced, display brightness set to 150 cd/m2. Actual battery life may vary depending on product configuration, usage, operational conditions and power management settings. Battery life will decrease over the lifetime of the battery.

The testing was on an Ultra 9, so the Ultra 7 should give minimally better battery life.

Real world doing what? Everyone does different things on a laptop and run with different settings and brightnesses, all of which have differing effects on the battery. Real world coding? Real world 3D-modeling? Real world web browsing and watching YT videos? Office apps? Gaming? Which real world battery life would you like?

ASUS's advertised battery life tests are done as most other laptop makers and they specifically stated how they set the settings to run the test. It's not "fantasyland", it's a reference point. Your battery life will vary and someone else's random experience probably won't be yours.

Returning this laptop as it gets very warm just using webcam for conferencing. Heat management is very poor and it gets worse because of oled. I don't think I got a lemon as this could be a trade off for the price. If you do not buy protection or insurance, you can kiss your ASUS laptop goodbye when it comes to warranty. ASUS rejects warranty with unverifiable reasons.

Asus is no longer a good company to deal with if you ever have a problem. This guy details the shit they pull. If you want to get make sure you get a warranty from somebody else.
