Clear/sweep the ground flat. Lay out the tarp. Lay out the tent and fold the tarp just under the outer edges of the tent. Set up the tent and the tarp shouldn't be visible.
This way water runs off the tent and into the dirt instead of down the tent onto the tarp and pooling under your body.

That said, if you're stuffing 8 people in a tent your nuts.
Last time I was in REI and was walking out, I was passing by someone talking to a rep and they said "do you have a tent that can fit 20 people", I glanced back at the wide eye'd rep and chuckled. Last thing I heard him say, "did you just say twenty people?".

I've had a Slumberjack I got 10 years ago and camp 1-2 times per year with no issues. Goes together and takes down easy. Only thing I have noticed versus other brands is that the tent itself is usually all open windows while the rainfly has none, so air circulation can be tricky. Keeping the rainfly on can be hot in warmer weather while leaving the rainfly off completely offers no privacy. Would still buy it again

I personally own the Aspen Grove. It'll fit two queen size camping mattresses with room in the center for gear or moving around pretty comfortably. Stow pockets are nice, setup takes about 20-30 minutes with two people. The front vestibule is a nice touch.
My biggest complaint is that the included stakes are low quality, but that's any lower priced tent. We got hit by pretty bad wind and rain the first night we took it out, but the interior stayed dry and only one stake came loose. I paid a bit more than the current price, and was pleased with it at that price point.
