Things like this are super useful for working on cars too, though for automotive work the spud is usually paired with a pry bar on the other end since Crescent wrenches are rarely the best tool for the job.

Edit: Sorry. To be clear, I wasn't making fun of that accident. Sorry to hear that 1 person died & 5 were injured. Hopefully, your daughter wasn't one of these 6 unlucky folks.
So (assuming she wasn't one of those folks), did this thing hit any part of her own apartment? If so, what was her 'remedy' that was (I assume) provided by the complex owner? Just curious.
I can't believe the jury awarded almost 1 billion dollars to the family of that deceased lady. That seems pretty excessive. I know they'll appeal that decision (or have already done so) & the award will likely be cut by 50%-75%.
But in the end, the lawyers get a fairly large portion of these types of court decisions. This is why many companies forego a jury trial & go straight to settling out of court.
