I'm in Washington, no tax on unprepared/processed "food"... I guess this protein shake counts as that.

What state are you in?
Not the person you are replying to but I know in NC (having managed a grocery store years ago) our state changed the classifications of many formally "prepackaged food" items to be considered "supplements." Their claim was so people could not buy them with EBT (food stamps). Some stuff made sense like Redbull or sports nutrition items but other entire categories of things like Ensure didn't because so many older people basically live off it. My grandma wasn't on food stamps but Ensure was one of the few things she hold down for the last few years of her life, I couldn't imagine if that was taken from her how long she would have lasted on air and water.
Also changing said classification altered the item's taxable status / rates...from 2% sales tax to 7%. Wonder how much that had to do with the change...

I'm also annoyed they stopped making their Zone Cinnamon Roll bars. Those were my go to for breakfast with my coffe.
