I have one of these, one of the only Mini PCs around this price point that have Type C power.

These have had bad rep in the past for having shady software installed. As you should with all Mini PCs, install your own OS.

You can find them on their website. What you want are the AM06 Pro Drivers

I have had many hardware issues with Ace Magician products. Of the 8 or so purchased, half have failed within 1 year and most within two months. Customer service is awful, and they make you jump through so many hoops to get a repair or replacement.

The price is very attractive, but there is a reason these are so inexpensive.

Is this would be faster than a mid range laptop produced around 2020-21? I am going to use it for office but need to work on 25+ chrome tabs, messenger and Google docs/sheets with some music on background from YouTube. That's all I need.
considering this is using a laptop cpu from early 2021, I'm gonna take a wild guess and say it'll perform a little faster than a 'mid range' laptop from that era (assuming mid range = ryzen 5 / i5).

it should be perfectly fine for your use case. but if you already have a laptop from that era, you won't notice too much of a difference for the money to be worth it, at least in my opinion.

If your laptop is still running a hard disk - and there's a good chance it is - you would see a HUGE performance upgrade by replacing the hard disk with a SSD. An SSD reads & writes data sooo much faster than a hard disk, and it's replacement would give you a "new PC feeling" for cheap.

Is there a non-Intel or ASUS mini PC with a 3.5" bay/SATA connector? I just want to drop in my old disk.
If you want to add a 2.5" SATA drive, it's fairly easy (remove the cover and use a small, included flat ribbon connector). If you meant a full-size desktop drive, your best approach would probably be to connect an external enclosure via one of the USB ports. The hard drive is likely heavier and larger than this entire mini-PC itself.

I've been using one of these for about a year as a home mini-server and it has been running well. A few months after initially purchasing it, I had a failure of the generic NVME SSD. The vendor replaced it fairly quickly and with minimal hassle. That was a relief since I was running BitLocker (this ships with Win11 Pro) and was worried about potential Windows activation issues (no problems whatsoever, though I think I had to decrypt/re-encrypt the drive after restore from backup).

This is a circa 2021 performance-ish laptop CPU so it will be about as fast and has like 19k spec so it is fast enough for office work and up to mid-spec 2024 mobile Intel CPU. The only thing is chrome can be heavy on memory so I would say consider 32GB. Since this is 2x8 you would have to swap out all the RAM to upgrade. That would be my only pause is the memory which is $30 more ($299) and I would say well worth it.

You can get the Beelink for the same price ($269) or less with this processor/. The only difference is the Beelink has a 5800H which is about 10-12% faster. Beelink IMHO is more mainstream and doesn't have the checkered past of Ace but that is 100% personal opinion. I purchased the SER5 Max for my kid for college and it is fast and no issues. You can mild game on it, but there are newer miniPC which approach more usable so I would not say this is the target. Also FWIW Plex now supports AMD GPU so if you want to avoid the Intel gen 13/14 issues you can do this and also hardware transcode.

Ace Magician? I keep seeing AceMagic laptops, on Amazon, seemingly always on sale for 75-80%off that typically cost 900-1000. Was always like is this even worth it? off brand tech and somewhat decent specs. I don't know brother. Amazon's 'typical' and 'original' prices kinda fishy these days really hope they not scamming us.

I have three machines that are extremely similar in specs to these (PELADN HA-2), to the point that I wouldn't be surprised if it was a rebrand situation.

What I can say is, for my use case as compute nodes in a Proxmox cluster, they work quite well. 2.5gbps LAN with a fairly capable and power-efficient CPU make it great for a low-power and decently performant virtualization cluster. Storage for my VMs run off of a NAS, and these guys do all the thinking. Haven't wanted for more past this with my home lab.

ETA: I know my use-case is fairly uncommon, but I figured I'd share my experience if someone had a similar project they might be considering.

Thanks. I'm trying to downsize and power. I'll either use an enclosure or clone the data onto a multiterabyte SSD.

just out of curiosity, what do you use your cluster/vms for? a lot of homelab youtubers talk about hardware for running VMs but don't talk about what they actually use them for. i can't think of many use cases other than just testing stuff.

not the person you ask question for, but i happen to use it for similar reasons.
i use it for customer demo purpose on the go, with the setup, i am looking at about about 14 VM all said and done. and i am so glad i didn't have to carry a beefy workstation with me anymore.

Where does it say in the opening post that it's for office usage? When a graphics capability is listed separately, it is good to understand the actual capability. Many people will see 'oh, graphics, that must mean it's good'. I am simply providing context. There are people who would likely consider this as a media unit, such as has already been mentioned for AndroidTV.

Oh... Wait... What is this it says on the LINK??
"[MINI PC PERFECT FOR GAMING] Powered by AMD Zen3 Ryzen 7 5800U and Radeon RX Vega Graphics(2000 MHz), our mini computer delivers up to 3.4% better performance in multitask computing compared to previous Zen 2 processors. Play your favorite games like APEX, CSGO, PUBG, COD, DOTA2, RUST, GTA5, and more with ease"

Is it? Is it the perfect gaming PC? No.

I'm sorry, is this an appliance or a computer? Show me a computer from the 1990s that can keep up with anything today.

Is this a good one for an Exit node for tailscale or wire guard so I can have me home IP when working remotely ?
