Consider the following:
1) The 3800 has trigger outs, which are necessary to turn on any downstream components after it is turned on itself (I have mine connected to Emotiva 2CH amp). However, the 4200 has only "Trigger Outs" but no "Trigger Ins" to automatically turn on when the 3800 turns on. You would have to turn on the 4200 manually every time you want the full system on!

2) In "pre-out mode" for a particular channels, the 3800 is capable of supplying ~2V. This is typically more than enough for dedicated amps. However, AVRs are not as robust as real amps and would typically be "low gain" amplifiers. It may not be possible to level match all the speakers at reference volumes!
There's nothing stopping anyone from trying this but temper expectations based on the above comments. Worst case scenario, you realize you need real amps and buy Fosi or Buckeyes to supplement the 3800!

1. The 3800 remote may likely power on/off both, if not he has original or can use universal…. Easy fix.
2. 4200 is rated 125 watts for 2 channels, that's higher than the 3800!
I would not call that "low gain" either.
He didn't mention using externals now, safe to assume extra power isn't needed for whatever speakers he will be driving.
Unless you know something he doesn't?
Level matching non issue and who regularly listens at reference levels!!!!
I for one do not but to be fair I also do not believe louder = better.

My dedicated amplifier, Emotiva XPA2, has an input sensitivity of 1.21V, for example.

Driving some object based speakers in a home, non issue, in my experience.

There's a reason why dedicated amps exist and why most folks don't piggy back AVRs w/each other!

Matter of fact there are people that use their older "better" powered AVR to drive their "all important L/R speakers" with success!
Has nothing to do with this "low gain"!
Especially compared to a $1300 XPA-2 cost, after all we are in SD!
People will easily find that that XPA-2 is not required for the cost.
I would think you of all people would understand that! 🤔

It's not urgent, but I do want to upgrade my receiver eventually so I can get separation of the front/back atmos speakers, but asides from that my sound is incredible. It's a 12x20x9 room approximately. SVS bipole surrounds for both the sides and rear. Klipsch in the ceiling. Everything really sounds amazing to me.
My main reason for the upgrade is just extra channel decoding, I won't need beyond 7.2.4 any time in the near future. Really can't imagine anything adding any significant improvement over what I have now. Thanks!

Have the xpa-3 drive your LCRs and turn off/disengage those internal amps.
That will make the rest of the channels more efficient.
Assign interval amps as needed.
With two subs definitely give the directional sub setting a try.
Works under the same theory as DLBC/ART and can be pretty impressive.
