Not the lowest but a more credible seller imo.

This can process 13 channels & integrate/calibrate/correct up to 4 independent subs out of the box!

If you find you want/need the popular Dirac RCs, this offers both Dirac Live & Dirac Live Bass Control.
It's even rumored that this will offer Dirac's ART in the near future.

Looks like Amazon is matching this sale.

What 13 channel processing AVR for $1600 are you talking about?

Hoping for some good sales around black friday. I need an upgrade from the 4200. It only processes 9 channels, I need at least 11. Right now I have my ceiling speakers wired together. so I have left and right separation, but not front to back. The 3800 had some great sales $899 last season. Would consider the 4800 too.

You could get the 3800 and use the 4200 for the other two channels, 11 channels!

Although using an older AVR as additional amps is possible, it's not recommended.
Consider the following:

1) The 3800 has trigger outs, which are necessary to turn on any downstream components after it is turned on itself (I have mine connected to Emotiva 2CH amp). However, the 4200 has only "Trigger Outs" but no "Trigger Ins" to automatically turn on when the 3800 turns on. You would have to turn on the 4200 manually every time you want the full system on!
https://manuals.denon.com/AVRX420...rxoojm.php

2) In "pre-out mode" for a particular channels, the 3800 is capable of supplying ~2V. This is typically more than enough for dedicated amps. However, AVRs are not as robust as real amps and would typically be "low gain" amplifiers. It may not be possible to level match all the speakers at reference volumes!

There's nothing stopping anyone from trying this but temper expectations based on the above comments. Worst case scenario, you realize you need real amps and buy Fosi or Buckeyes to supplement the 3800!

I agree not ideal but it's more an aesthetic issue than anything else.

1. The 3800 remote may likely power on/off both, if not he has original or can use universal…. Easy fix.
2. 4200 is rated 125 watts for 2 channels, that's higher than the 3800!
I would not call that "low gain" either.
He didn't mention using externals now, safe to assume extra power isn't needed for whatever speakers he will be driving.
Unless you know something he doesn't?

Level matching non issue and who regularly listens at reference levels!!!!
I for one do not but to be fair I also do not believe louder = better.

"Low gain" would be a characteristic of how the downstream AVR (in this case, the 4200) handles the RCA inputs to make use of the internal amps. If the 4200 can't handle 2V from the 3800, then there may be a mismatch. Input sensitivity is only 200 mV.

My dedicated amplifier, Emotiva XPA2, has an input sensitivity of 1.21V, for example.

Audible wise you would hear ZERO difference unless maybe you were playing reference levels in a huge auditorium.

Driving some object based speakers in a home, non issue, in my experience.

You've assumed the 4200 would have surround/object duty. What if offloading the all important L/R speakers to the 4200?

There's a reason why dedicated amps exist and why most folks don't piggy back AVRs w/each other!

lol you would be in the same boat!

Matter of fact there are people that use their older "better" powered AVR to drive their "all important L/R speakers" with success!

Has nothing to do with this "low gain"!
Especially compared to a $1300 XPA-2 cost, after all we are in SD!

People will easily find that that XPA-2 is not required for the cost.

I would think you of all people would understand that! 🤔

Appreciate the discussion! I have the 4200 power my side surrounds (2), rear surrounds (2), and ceiling speakers (4, but like I said there's no front to back separation, my receiver can't decode enough channels, I have both the front and back wired together). I have an Emotiva XPA-3 driving the front towers and center. RTi12s, power hungry speakers for sure. I think technically the 4200 could power my entire system, but unfortunately can't decode enough.

It's not urgent, but I do want to upgrade my receiver eventually so I can get separation of the front/back atmos speakers, but asides from that my sound is incredible. It's a 12x20x9 room approximately. SVS bipole surrounds for both the sides and rear. Klipsch in the ceiling. Everything really sounds amazing to me.

My main reason for the upgrade is just extra channel decoding, I won't need beyond 7.2.4 any time in the near future. Really can't imagine anything adding any significant improvement over what I have now. Thanks!

Your setup makes a lot of sense and similar to mine (you power LCR w/XPA3 and me powering LR w/XPA2). Let's see if supermanrob is consistent and criticizes your setup as he did mine! Big Grin

In that case the 3800 for $899(hopefully soon) would probably be at least the least expensive, imo best bet.

Have the xpa-3 drive your LCRs and turn off/disengage those internal amps.
That will make the rest of the channels more efficient.
Assign interval amps as needed.

With two subs definitely give the directional sub setting a try.
Works under the same theory as DLBC/ART and can be pretty impressive.
