Great. Hope this comes down to $799. Still great price for someone who is looking for one.
I want to know that too, though m2 to m3 benefits alone doesn't excite me, but the improved ssd from m2 to m3 is an important consideration
I went with this over the M2 for $750 for a few reasons:
1) Its the current top spec cpu in MBA - support will be longer vs the M2
2) The SSD is much faster due to the dual chips instead of the single bottleneck
3) You can't add resources later, so in the future new versions of MacOS, AI, Office, whatever will ask for more resources (see point 1)
4) For $150 more now I'm expecting 2+ years more life...
5) If the China tariffs do go into effect, all these macbooks will skyrocket so resell with 16GB M3 will be higher than 16GB M2.

I was on the fence over the weekend between the M2/16/256 ($749) vs M3/8/256 ($849), so +$50 for M3/16/256($899) made it an easy decision for me today.

Ahh so makes sense they are starting to discount previous year's model. I'm sure it's all the same for a general user.
Probably. Still doing pretty well with my base model M1 MacBook Air but the battery is getting old and 16GB RAM would be an improvement. The Edge browser sometimes beachballs on my M1. Thinking it's probably the 8GB RAM.

At least as low if not lower. Might not be a bad idea to wait if you don't need it immediately. I'm tempted to buy an M4 Pro now but don't need one badly enough for it to be a no-brainer at the current price point.

Do indeed. Wish they could be my retailer of choice but I've had pretty bad shipping experiences of Apple stuff from them over the last several years. Like they'll send a MacBook in a big box with no protective wrap or anything. Or an iPad in a shipping envelope. The items have seemed fine but it's just not a great feeling to receive an expensive new product like that.

My shipping experiences have been much better with Apple, Amazon and Best Buy.

In the market for a new MacBook but I'm wary of getting too powerful a MacBook Air due to thermal throttling. I'm not sure I see the point in paying extra for a more powerful laptop that can't sustain the performance and downclocks itself. It's fine for intermittent intensive workloads but I do wish they had a lower end MacBook Pro around this price for the active cooling.

If you've not seen the M3 MacBook Airs can hit 115C when under sustained loads, you then lose 20% performance as it tries to cooldown.
Picked up this model earlier today. I have been applying updates, downloading and installing all of my apps this afternoon - haven't heard the fans kick on once. This is incredibly fast compared to the 2017 MacBook Pro I'm coming from.

I'm a heavy photoshop and Lightroom user. No issues with performance at all so far.

My only gripe is with this stupid notch at the top of the display (think Dynamic Island like on the iPhone). Looks like it's a "feature" with Sequoia but in reality it serves no purpose. The cursor get lost behind it and it disappears when launching full screen apps? Not sure why we need this AND the control center, notification bar w/widgets.

Don't worry. You'll never hear the fans turn on,
On your MacBook Air 😂

Won't it make sense to buy now while we wait for any possible drop during BF. Amazon has extended returns for apple products going into mid Jan.

The M-series Macbook airs have no fans. It's nice, because you never get any fan noise and dust doesn't collect within the computer, but sustained high CPU workloads will lead to significant thermal throttling.

I have no idea if this is the deal I've been waiting for. If someone could please give me a quick hand, I would be grateful.

I rely solely on an iPad (2019 Apple iPad (10.2", Wi-Fi, 128GB, 7th Generation)) now which is very slow and cannot hold a battery charge, so it always has to be plugged in for the things I do: accessing the internet and communicating with others (ie iMessages, email) and my finances. Occasionally, I need Word and will likely buy it. I have an iPhone 14 and I love it. Really don't want a "regular" computer and like having my iPad and iPhone communicate together.

Had a desktop iMac my dad passed down to me which could not update to Sequoia (? was recent) and had to recycle it which was very difficult (it was superb in its day). My point here is it must be an Apple product and need my update to not be obsolete for many, many years. I used to type 85 WPM, so I enjoy a good keyboard.

Now that the M3's are becoming affordable, I'd like to buy one IF it can handle the pressure I bring lol. Do I want the M3, 16gb, 256GB or the 512GB Storage? Did not reach my storage limit on my iPad, but pay $2.99 a month for the cloud, which would be nice to not have to use forever. I'm also aware Word would use some of my storage space.

Thanks so much in advance for any assistance.

Just usable life span... FWIW this MBA is replacing a mid-2011 13" MBP that I've added SSD and ram, and hacked to get Catalina on it - so this is a major jump for me Big GrinAs for OS support - it looks like MacOS is running about 5+ years worth of devices in support. OS15 supports some back to 2017 models. Regardless, they'll work much longer even if its not on the latest OS.
Nice analysis but here's the counter: MBA batteries are likely going to go off in 4-5 years max. Potentially the cable too. So that's around 300$ worth equipment you may need to replace.
Save that on M2 and you can buy a new MBA by paying a bit extra in few years.
Lack of 2nd display screen is a bummer though for m2. Also battery life is lesser.
