Tim Cook is cooking Apple users with 2x the price for paltry 512GB and additional 8GB RAM upgrade.

Keep buying though. $AAPL! šŸ˜‚

There is an M4 Pro Mac Mini with 16 GB of RAM and a 256 GB SSD for 1/2 the price?

This machine has a 12-core CPU (8 performance and 4 efficiency) instead of the $600 M4 with 10 cores (4 performance and 6 efficiency). That means you get double the performance cores (and two fewer efficiency). You also have a GPU that's more powerful (16 cores versus 10). You also have RAM with more bandwidth (273GB/s versus 120GB/s). This machine also has 3 Thunderbolt 5 ports instead of TB4. This machine can support 3 6K monitors at 60Hz, versus the base machine that does 2 6K monitors (plus a third at 5K). This machine also does DisplayPort 2.1 over USB-C but the base model does not.

If that doesn't provide enough benefit for someone to buy this instead, buy the less expensive machine. This Mini can replace the $2000 Mac Studio for some people.

Storage and memory upgrades aside (pricing upgrades are horrendously price gouging), the pro SoC is much more powerful in terms of GPU performance which do matter in some creator workflows. As a PC Gaming Hardware Enthusiast I never thought I would say something nice about a Mac, but that pro M4 SoC is great for what it's intended for. Poo poo pricing for Ram and Storage though, which is why I won't buy it.

I was under the impression that Mac gaming was dying. The move to Apple silicon made it harder to port stuff and so there was less official support. I think it was Counter-Strike 2 that dropped Mac support saying there basically wasn't much demand anyhow.
Apple supporting Metal and not supporting other graphics AP is the real killer. Then they also upset off a lot of the game engine companies who could be a great asset in helping game publishers using their engines to port games to OSX, so they are not exactly chomping at the bit to help Apple out.

All that means that if a game publisher wants to do cross platform support then it takes a huge amount of dev work, testing and cost to get access to what is today a very small gaming audience that does not have access to their games via other means (eg separate gaming computer / laptop / handheld, console or something else).

I believe that Apple helped fund and provide technical assistance for the port for Death Stranding, which is why the native version is available on the App store, but not on Steam. If Apple continues to do this, eventually they might build up a gaming audience on OSX, but Apple has a poor track record for sticking with initiatives like that.

This should be the base spec for mac mini at $599 lol
Apple would never operate on margins that low. And they have no reason to. I would say the base model should have a 1TB SSD at $599, but that's about it. The Base M4 and 16GB of memory is fine (for now), only gripe is the storage. Hopefully, we'll get third party upgrades soon enough.
