I don't like how much Apple charges for RAM/storage upgrades, but maybe an upgrade makes sense if 16GB isn't sufficient for your workloads?
I run a 16GB PC desktop currently and I keep hitting RAM limits.
Buy seperate larger/cheaper SSD from Amazon and install yourself.
I have a 2TB SSD in an external ACASIS 40Gbps NVMe enclosure ($76.50 on Amazon after a 15% coupon) connected to Thunderbolt 4 and it's faster than the Apple internal 256GB SSD. I have everything on it (including the MacOS installation) and it works without a glitch. I use the internal 256GB SSD for media.

Is it a proprietary connector? I thought it was just a nvm m2 2230 connector. Looking further into it I guess that is not the case. God damn apple.
Anyway... yeah at this time it looks like you would have to get an SSD from the exact level of M4 chip (M4, M4 Pro, etc) and only within that family the SSDs cards could be swapped between machines. But definitely off the shelf NVMEs won't work at all.
Typical Apple
Unless you are absolutely 1000% sure you need more than the new base 16GB RAM to accomplish whatever you need to do with a Mac computer, it is incredibly hard to justify paying basically TWICE the price of the entire computer, for such small component upgrades.
I also agree that if you have justified the need for upgrading to 24GB and have no problem paying the rather extreme cost for additional internal storage, then going for the M4 Pro Mac Mini makes even more sense. Its significantly more powerful.. can run more monitors and at a higher resolution/refresh rate.. and also comes with Thunderbolt 5 so its further future-proofed.

Sorry I get triggered because this one is really bad because internally the SSD chips are on a removable module, and you can't upgrade them. It's like an Apple tease.
