Awesome "gateway" board game. Friendships and kinships will be tested!
Not really, the base game is really simple. Download the app and it'll teach to you to play.
The setup is a little intimidating at first, but the mechanics are pretty intuitive and you're playing games in parallel to each other. You are trying to combine resources to expand your little territory and there are a few ways to do that. Having the biggest army, the longest road, or the most settlements will get you enough points to win, and games move pretty quick.

We play with an 8 and 10 yr old. We gave them the same instructions as a new adult player and they caught on very quickly! They win games frequently.
I've taught kids as young as 7 to play. It really teaches them about bartering skills.
Depends on your child I think 🤔? My 6 year old played the jr version first (at 5) and then started playing this one with us and loves it

Catan has been our favorite board game for family night. It's a mixture high replay, moderate difficulty and simplicity.

My 5, 7, and 9 year old play the base game with me. They've all won, without influence, the 5 year old just wants longest road and sometimes we can't do anything about it. 11 year old will no doubt enjoy it. Gameplay can be slower with kids, so if they can't sit still for 2.5 hours, then they might not like it
