Head-fi forums says: bass is good, but mids and highs aren't amazing. ANC is ok. Case is too big to be practical, one poster said it's like hiding an engagement ring box.
I agree regarding the sound quality for classical music. I was impressed, esp given the degradation from Bluetooth.

I got this for "free" as a gift for many years of service. It's not audiophile quality, but its design and tuning honor audiophile concepts.

I tested using lossless recordings on the Adagio streaming service.

Is the noise cancelling worth $40 compared to the TW-E5B offered at $39?

Don't pick these over the TW-E5B just for the noise cancelling. Select the TW-E7B if you also think that they will have better sound (for your taste). Otherwise I don't think they are worth paying double the price vs the the TW-E5B.

I paid $59 for the TW-E5B on a previous sale and would rather have money back. If I hadn't spent that money, I would've given these a try instead.

But if I consider the price what else exceeds this?
Still using AKG N400.

Snatch me a pair! Time to give the quality of "made in Japan" another try after the sub-par experience of the Final Audio. For earbuds the transparency mode is more important than ANC mode to me. Getting my Best of Final Fantasy collection ready now!

Yeah, I'm not a fan of ANC, so I usually gloss over the part of any review that discusses it. I'm in for one black pair.

idk if anything "exceeds this" but I would buy this for several reasons.

I prefer the physical buttons, decent/good sound quality for earbuds as expected from something so small and the size of earbuds + case.

I have lost several pairs of earbuds in the last several years due to them being way too small - these ones are not ridiculously large but have a nice feel in my palm so i won't be afraid to lose them or think it'll slip out - but these are guy pockets.

I'm not a fan of ANC, nor do I need it or require it on earbuds as I'd rather have it on headphones instead as when I'm using earbuds I'm either walking around so I don't want the ANC so I can be aware of my surroundings

Just a quick report on these. At $79 I don't feel like it's a horrible deal, but I think there are better buys in the same price range. You'd be better off with something like the Earfun Air Pro 4 which has a much wider soundstage and is distortion-free across the EQ band.
These Yamaha's are oddly tuned. The mids on mine are way too present and there is distortion in the lower and upper ranges. It's odd, and I cant quite place it, but it sounds like I'm listening to someone talk through mylar film...but that isn't really quite right either. It's just ever present distortion no matter how I EQ these. It's like listening to Compact Discs back during the loudness wars, just massive amounts of clipping. I'm still looking for the style of music these work best with, but they really aren't for me. I'm giving them to one of my kids and going to look for something else. Maybe I got a bad pair.

Thank you for reporting back. I feel like we don't have enough post-deal user reports / reviews on earbuds and other audio gear.
